The damp basement of the slum greeted him with the smell of mold. Prince Park Jimin maintained his regal bearing even here. He didn't scream or plead. That night, when the chieftain ordered the prisoner to be tortured to reveal the secrets of the royal treasury, Jungkook disobeyed for the first time. He descended into the dungeon with the keys and a warm cloak.

Jungkook realized: he had betrayed everyone, but he had gained something he would have sold his soul for. And when he heard footsteps outside the door, he shielded the prince. Come what may.

"Let's run north," Jungkook exhaled. "I'll take you to the border."
