Thanatos

•Rage: This is a technique that consists of creating energy spheres to attack the opponent. •God of Death's Eye: This technique allows Thanatos, through his powers of clairvoyance, to know what is happening in his universe, as he can learn about events in which he wasn't even present. He can also create a distortion in time and space, similar to a wormhole, which he uses to show his opponent what is happening at a specific moment in another place. Thanks to this ability, Thanatos can kill any living being he chooses without making physical contact, even if it is light-years away. •Terrible Providence: This is a technique of Thanatos in which he extends his arms before him and releases a tremendous blast of cosmos, a magnificent sphere charged with cosmic energy, which damages everything around it, except himself, and which can take any form, whether a ray, an explosion or a series of explosions. Whatever the form, upon reaching the target, the projection paralyzes the victim's body and mind to the point of sacrificing them, annihilating their five senses at once while, instantly, the mind is plunged into madness and the body is completely dismembered, as shown when the god unleashes it. •Merciless Judgment: This technique involves launching invisible spheres of energy at the enemy, even if they are light-years away or in another dimension. •Tartaros Phobia: With this technique, the god of death Thanatos summons the souls of those who died murdered by his hands, souls that wander eternally in hell. The technique can physically and spiritually harm the opponent.

Seiya is wounded and his will is broken. He believes it's impossible to defeat Thanatos, but he hears Saori's voice encouraging him to continue, reminding him of past victories over adversity. He also hears the voices of his friends and sister calling his name, rekindling his determination to fight. He begins to raise his cosmos, Saori urging him to reach a level he's never before attained, to infinity. Seiya rises, his body surrounded by fragments of his Bronze Cloth, glowing like small flames. When they dissipate, a new Cloth covers his body. Thanatos is astonished, wondering if the armor is a Kamei. Hypnos arrives and explains to his brother that it's a God Cloth, something he'd seen in the age of myth, warning Thanatos of the danger of underestimating Seiya. Thanatos laughs, believing that no matter how powerful the Cloth, they can never defeat him. He attacks Seiya, but Seiya dodges, launching a powerful kick from the air that knocks the god's hand, causing him to drop Athena's Cloth, which Seiya seizes. Thanatos falls, but rises again, enraged, vowing to send Seiya to an eternal hell of suffering. Thanatos attacks with his Terrible Providence, but Seiya stops the attack with his hands and counters with his Pegasus Ryūsei Ken, destroying Thanatos' armor and inflicting severe damage. However, this attack doesn't kill Thanatos, who rises again to attack, but Seiya delivers a powerful punch that ends Thanatos' life. As he lies dying, Thanatos wonders how a god like him could be defeated by a mere human.

The last to arrive is Ikki, who has a brief conversation with Thanatos, telling him he will pay for killing Pandora. He then attacks him with his Hougoku Renou, which manages to damage the god's armor. Thanatos congratulates him and attacks with his Terrible Providence, but Ikki survives because Thanatos chose not to use his full power to avoid staining the place with blood. The other Saints get up again to try to attack Thanatos, causing the god to unleash such a powerful attack that it destroys their armor. As a result of this attack, they are left wounded and defenseless on the ground. Because of this, the Gold Cloths in the Underworld want to help them, but cannot cross the Hyperdimension. Seeing this, Thanatos bursts into laughter. However, Poseidon intervenes and, with the help of his cosmos, the armors manage to reach Elysion. Thanatos mocks this act, saying it only reflects Poseidon's envy because Hades was about to take over Earth. Although he acknowledges that these armors have helped the Saints before in their battle against the gods, Thanatos tells them they won't this time and unleashes such a powerful attack that it knocks down the five protagonists and destroys the Gold Cloths they were wearing. From the impact, Seiya drops Athena's Cloth that he was carrying, so Thanatos picks it up and says he will destroy it to end everything.

Thanatos attacks with a sphere of energy, but the Saint dodges it by flying with the wings of his armor and, once in the sky, counterattacks with his Pegasus Ryūsei Ken, causing Thanatos to defend himself with his hand. This only angers him further, and he launches an attack that Seiya cannot dodge, destroying his wings and causing him to crash to the ground [4][3]. Seiya recovers quickly and attacks with his Pegasus Suisei Ken, although this causes no damage to the god, or so he thought, since upon examining his hand he realized that Seiya had managed to injure him. Furious, he begins to brutally beat Seiya, telling him that he will destroy his body and torture him even after death; however, he realizes that this will not be enough, so he decides to torture him by killing his sister who is on Earth first. Thanatos creates a portal so that Seiya can see him murder his sister. However, Kiki, thanks to her psychic powers, realizes the god's attack, so she warns the others of the situation and they begin to protect Seika with their bodies. Thanatos communicates with them to warn them that their efforts are useless and that the girl will die as punishment for the blasphemies that Seiya has committed against the gods [5]. However, Thanatos' words do not dissuade the Saints, who place a barrier around Seika to protect her, causing Thanatos to attack with more force to finish them all off. Seeing this, Seiya rises up furiously and tries to use the Pegasus Rolling Crush against the god, but it is useless because Thanatos disappears from Seiya's hands. But at that moment the rest of the Bronze Saints arrive and begin to use their techniques against the god, although they prove ineffective and are knocked down by him.

As Seiya lies shocked on the ground, Thanatos approaches him to tell him that a god is not obligated to answer the questions of a mortal, but points out that he admires his dedication to Athena and prepares to kill him. However, Hypnos appears before him and tells him that this place is a utopia and that Hades is forbidden from shedding blood there, but he replies that he cannot allow these mortals to continue parading through Elysion. Upon hearing this answer, Hypnos asks him why he decides to destroy everything so lightly and if it was necessary to kill Pandora, to which he replies that she had betrayed Hades, but Hypnos considered that they could still use her now that the Specters had been defeated, something that Thanatos does not consider so because the two of them were always more than enough. Furthermore, they have already killed Athena, but Hypnos replies that he did not kill her, since deciding whether she lives or dies is Hades's business. Seiya gets up upon hearing this and asks Hypnos where Athena is, then the god points towards the Temple of Hades, but explains that Athena is trapped inside an urn that will drain her blood until she dies and that not even the power of Zeus's lightning bolt will be able to free her. Seiya runs towards the Temple of Hades. Thanatos tells his brother that he will not allow this Saint to advance and that he intends to end his life, to which, before leaving, Hypnos replies that he should at least avoid staining the Temple of Hades with blood, something that Thanatos considers a mockery, since he will not allow him to go that far and will end everything in an instant.

During the Saints' invasion of the Underworld, Pandora recovers her memories thanks to Ikki's cosmos and explains how she freed Hypnos and Thanatos, and also how Hades killed her family when he was reborn on Earth. She realizes that Hades only used her and the Specters in his plans, and that everything she had told them was a lie. So she decides to help Ikki cross the Hyperdimension, giving him the necklace that Hypnos and Thanatos gave her to move freely through the Underworld. While tying the necklace on Ikki's hand, Pandora starts to feel ill and warns Ikki of how dangerous Hypnos and Thanatos are, falling dead a moment later. Thanatos was playing his lyre for his Nymphs when suddenly two Nymphs enter his Temple. At first, Thanatos thinks this commotion is due to some mischief of Cupid, but the Nymphs tell him that a being covered in mud and blood has arrived in Elysion. Intrigued, Thanatos leaves his Temple to investigate the commotion. When he arrives, he finds Seiya asking one of the Nymphs if she knows where Hades is. Upon seeing him, Thanatos tells him that he doesn't tolerate a mortal, and even more so a Saint of Athena, entering Elysion. Being mistaken for a Specter, he tells him his name and explains that he is a god in the service of Hades. Seiya reacts in surprise, but wants to know where Saori is, to which he replies that she is dead and that his brother is probably handing her corpse over to Hades at that moment. These words only provoke Seiya to furiously beat him, but his blows cause him no harm, and he sends him flying with a simple gesture of his hand.

Elsewhere, his brother Hypnos senses Thanatos's defeat, but says he will not intervene and that a 200-year stay sealed away will likely be enough for him to learn not to underestimate his opponents; after all, that time is insignificant to the lifespan of the gods. Two centuries later, his sister Ker sends an evil spirit to corrupt one of the Saints who will begin the new generation that will fight in the next Holy War. She then goes inside the tower where her brothers are sealed to inform them of what she has done and how this could cause Athena's death and unleash internal chaos in the Sanctuary. Thirteen years before the start of the Holy War, the seal placed by Athena weakens, and the cosmos of Hypnos and Thanatos influences a girl named Pandora who lived in the castle near the tower where these gods were sealed. The girl is drawn by a strange force, which removes the lock from the door, and upon entering the tower she finds a box which, upon opening, breaks the seal containing these gods. They thank Pandora for freeing their souls, which had been trapped for two hundred years, and introduce themselves as Thanatos and Hypnos. The gods explain that Hades' soul will be reborn as their brother and will use his mother's body to enter this era, so it is her duty to care for that soul until the Specters appear in this era and the Holy War begins; therefore, they will give her the power to lead the Specters, and when the battle is over, they will grant her eternal life. At the end of the conversation, the souls of both gods leave that place.

Thanatos is enraged by this offense and reopens the path of the gods, intending to kill Manigold and Sage. The dimensional rift begins to absorb them, and Manigold's foot is crushed. Sage counterattacks with his Seki Shiki Meikai Ha, but the technique doesn't achieve the desired effect and only slightly moves the god's soul from its body, so it only returns to its body once more. Before the god can rejoin the battle, Manigold rises and also uses the Seki Shiki Meikai Ha, moving the god's soul a little further from its host. The student and master then use the Seki Shiki Meikai Ha together, moving the god's soul even further from its host's body. Manigold seizes this opportunity to grab the god's host's body and throws himself and the god into the path of the gods, causing both him and the god's body to be torn apart. Sage is devastated by his pupil's sacrifice, but the god's soul tells him it was a vain sacrifice, as it only needs to possess a new body, and that body could be the one in front of him. Thanatos's soul enters Sage's body, mocking him and saying he will attack the Sanctuary from within using his body. But the god realizes something strange is happening and his soul cannot take complete control of Sage, who reveals he is wearing the Cloth of Ara, armor in which he and his brother placed their cosmos for 200 years, and plans to seal the god's soul in a box given to him by Athena. Thanatos desperately tries to destroy Sage's body from within, but despite all the wounds he receives, Sage doesn't give up and manages to trap Thanatos's soul inside the box, sealing the god. After the effort and injuries sustained, Sage also falls dead.

Thanatos, tired of playing with the human, decides to finish him off by opening the path of the gods. The dimensional rift begins to absorb Manigoldo, but before this happens, Sage appears and uses the Athena seals he carries to close the path created by Thanatos. Thanatos doesn't waste time and unleashes his Tartaros Phobia, putting both master and student in serious trouble. However, as the spirits drag Manigoldo towards the god, he uses his Seki Shiki Konsō Ha, using all the spirits the god was summoning as gunpowder to create a massive explosion that wounds the god. Sage then reveals he has been preparing for 200 years to fight Thanatos, and both his techniques and his student's are designed to combat him. This only fuels Thanatos's rage, who now attacks with his Terrible Providence. Seeing this, Manigoldo throws himself at the sphere of energy released by the god, but his effort is useless and his armor begins to disintegrate along with his body. Before this happens, Sage intervenes and uses the Athena seals to contain and disperse the energy released by the god. Thanatos mocks his opponents and attacks Manigoldo to demonstrate that the protection his armor provides is useless against his power. Sage releases several seals to try and contain the god's power, but Thanatos creates a massive explosion that destroys them, an explosion that even makes the palace where the fight takes place begin to shake. Thanatos calls Sage trash and prepares to attack him, but at that moment, Manigoldo rises angrily and punches him in the face, telling him he won't let him insult his master.

Alone's attack on the Sanctuary causes this god and his brother to begin to doubt his intentions and hidden motives. By analyzing his reactions and actions, he and his brother conclude that Hades has not yet awakened, so they convince Pandora to use her power and imprison Alone in a prison in the Dream World. This plan is successfully executed, and Alone is imprisoned, giving him and his brother control of the army. Once Alone is out of action, he and his brother begin to reorganize the army. The first thing Thanatos does is use the forest surrounding the cathedral (the army's base) as a defense, as he has placed several traps and creatures that will attack intruders, and it is guarded by one of his favorite Specters, Veronica, to whom he has given a fraction of his power. However, Manigold manages to cross the forest and confronts Veronica, a fight from which the Saint emerges victorious. But before Veronica is defeated, Thanatos orders her to destroy the Saint along with him, but she fails in this last mission. Manigold follows his trail until he comes face to face with Thanatos, while he and his brother were playing a game of chess. It is then that the Gold Saint and the god engage in a violent fight, in which the god uses the chess pieces, which have acquired a colossal size, to attack the Saint. After dodging several of his blows, the Saint uses his Seki Shiki Kisōen to destroy them and attempts to attack his opponent unsuccessfully.

When Itia, the current Pope of the Sanctuary, is about to die due to old age, his soul wanders through the Hill of Yomotsu, where he encounters Thanatos and Hypnos along with the Specter of Papillon, who give him the opportunity to return to life and do something to end the conflict, promising him that if he guides humanity towards a better path the battle will end. Thus, Itia accepts the deal and, through the Fairies of the Underworld, begins to control the Gold Saints so that they rebel against Athena and, alongside Itia, seek to dominate the Earth to create a better world. At the end of the Holy War, after Hades' soul-host is defeated, Thanatos and Hypnos appear before a group of surviving Saints and eliminate them all except Hakurei and Sage. This event leaves a lifelong mark on these two Saints, who prepare for the next 200 years to fight and defeat these gods. At an unknown time before the Holy War against Athena begins in the 18th century, Thanatos appears before Luco, a healer. The god offers him the chance to save Pefko (his adopted son), in exchange for him becoming a Specter and curing his patients with the Flower of the Underworld, which turns them into servants of Hades. Luco accepts the offer and in return the god of death keeps his part of the bargain. Once the 108 Specters begin to appear, the god is in charge of recruiting the one who would be the Specter of Hanuman of Hades' army, who has been reborn in Jamir as a young man named Tokusa, so he presents himself to the young man and offers him immortality and power in exchange for killing his loved ones, to which he agrees and begins to murder his family.

Thanatos is a haughty and arrogant deity who views humans as mere bubbles of filth that vanish in the blink of an eye, a viewpoint he shares with Hades himself, who also sees humanity as repugnant beings who must be punished. Although he is usually seen as an elegant man with refined manners who enjoys playing the lyre and chess in his free time, this all changes when he confronts the mortals who make up Athena's army, especially if they manage to challenge him, as the god completely changes and becomes utterly irrational due to his anger towards them. In the end, his overconfidence and underestimation of his adversaries lead to his imprisonment for centuries.

Thanatos appears as an adult male with a height and physique superior to any of the five protagonists. He has long silver hair and his eyes are also silver and completely empty, similar to those of a blind person. One of his main characteristics is the five-pointed star he wears on his forehead. His clothing consists mainly of armor (Surplice) that protects most of his body, and he also wears a Greek tunic over it. During the Holy War that took place in the 18th century, Thanatos kept his real body hidden in Elysion and took the body of a human as an avatar for his soul; the chosen human was a man with a similar appearance to the god's real body, although there is a rather noticeable difference, as he has dark hair. Most of the time in this body, the god is seen wearing a priest's robe. When the god prepares to fight, the hair of the body he has chosen transforms into silver, giving him an appearance similar to that of the god's real body. Furthermore, using his cosmos, he creates an imitation of the Surplice that the god wears when in his real body; this armor is not a real object and disappears the moment the god's soul leaves the body of his avatar.
