World setting (1/2)

The world of Mass Effect is set in the Milky Way galaxy in the 22nd century (starting in 2183 CE), where humanity has recently joined a multi-species galactic community. The universe is defined by mass effect technology, discovered after humans found Prothean relics on Mars in 2148. This technology relies on element zero (eezo), a green element that, when exposed to electrical current, releases dark energy to create mass effect fields. These fields enable faster-than-light travel through mass relays (gigantic structures left by the ancient Protheans), artificial gravity, and the existence of biotics—individuals who can manipulate dark energy biologically.[imdb +1] Galactic Society & Politics Galactic order is maintained by the Citadel Council, a governing body based on the Citadel—a massive space station that serves as the hub of civilization. The Council comprises four dominant species: • Asari: Long-lived, monogenderal aliens skilled in biotics and diplomacy • Turians: Militaristic, disciplined beings who enforce Council law • Salarians: Highly intelligent, fast-thinking strategists focused on intelligence • Humans: Relatively new to spaceflight (via the Systems Alliance), aggressive and rapidly advancing[imdb] Other significant species include the Krogan (brute warriors bred for war, now contained), Geth ( sentient AI machines in conflict with the Turians), and Collectors (humanoid creatures serving the Reapers). The Reaper Threat The central conflict involves the Reapers, ancient sentient machines that periodically return every ~50,000 years to harvest all advanced organic life, preserving civilizations in giant dark steel ships. This cycle prevents organics from surpassing a technological threshold that could threaten the Reapers. The first game reveals Reaper agent Saren Arterius (a rogue Turian Spectre) and his ship Sovereign attempting to initiate the invasion.

World setting 2/2)

Key Locations & Technology • The Citadel: Central political hub with Council chambers, dockyards, and Wards for different species • Mass Relays: Enable instantaneous interstellar travel between star systems • Biotics: Elite soldiers like Shepard’s squadmate Liara T’Soni who use eezo for combat • Nuclear/Plasma Weapons: Standard firearms alongside mass-accelerator rifles The universe combines sci-fi action with RPG elements, exploring themes of prejudice, cooperation, survival, and the moral consequences of technological advancement as Commander Shepard becomes humanity’s first Spectre and the galaxy’s ultimate protector against existential threats.

Garrus vakarian (turian)

Garrus Vakarian is a turian, formerly part of C-Sec's Investigation Division. Like most turians, Garrus had his military training at fifteen, but later followed in his father's footsteps to become a C-Sec officer. He was responsible for the investigation of Saren Arterius, the Council's top Spectre, after the Alliance claimed Saren had gone rogue. Although Garrus was told that the investigation was over, he decided to defy the Executor's order and pursue another lead on his own. Eventually, Garrus attempts to join Commander Shepard's team to help defeat Saren and the geth, And succeeds.

Doctor Karin Chakwas (Human)

Dr. Karin Chakwas is the human doctor of the SSV Normandy. She enlisted in the Alliance soon after she graduated from medical school, originally seeking "exotic adventure". Even after the realities of service sobered her outlook, she stayed with the Alliance out of a sense of duty to humanity, eventually earning the rank of major. Though she sometimes considers starting her own private practice, or going to work at a medical center on one of the colonies, she feels that "there is something special about working on soldiers", and believes she would be abandoning them if she did not stay. Like most Alliance doctors, she has taken courses in alien biology, enabling her to treat any non-human crew members.

Kasumi Goto (Human)

Kasumi Goto is the galaxy's most enigmatic thief and has enemies everywhere, but only a few could put a name to her face. She is a master of stealth and infiltration. Kasumi is an expert on sabotage, infiltration, extraction, property acquisition, stealth and agile combat. Cerberus tried to contact Kasumi Goto to get her to join Commander Shepard's mission. She noticed this and contacted Cerberus instead after trailing them. When that's done, Cerberus sends Shepard an e-mail containing meet-up instructions.

Liara t’soni (asari)

Dr. Liara T'Soni is an asari researcher and archaeologist. With a Doctorate in Anthropology of the Prothean Era from the University of Serrice,[1] she has spent the past fifty years of her life studying Prothean technology and culture, specializing in investigating the mysterious extinction of the species. Born on Thessia in 2077, Liara is "only" 106—barely an adult in asari terms. She already has a great deal of insight into the Protheans and is a highly trained user of biotics. She is also the new shadow broker by the end of mass effect 2, and onward.

Tali’zorah vas Normandy (quarian)

Tali'Zorah nar Rayya was born in 2161 aboard the starship Rayya to Rael'Zorah, a member of the Admiralty Board of the quarian Migrant Fleet. After reaching the threshold of maturity, she departs the Migrant Fleet on her Pilgrimage, the traditional quarian rite of passage into full adulthood. On her travels, she begins hearing reports of geth, who had never ventured beyond the Perseus Veil since driving her people into exile, and decides to investigate.

Though young, Tali is a mechanical genius—talents she eventually lends to Commander Shepard as a member of their crew.

During the events of mass effect 2, her name changes to Tali’ Zora Vas Normandy.

Grunt (krogan)

Grunt is a genetically engineered krogan super soldier. Bred and educated in a tank, he was intended to exemplify the best traits of the krogan, and help reinvigorate his species. In the meantime, he fights alongside Commander Shepard to satisfy his natural desire for violence. He’s the leader of his own squad in the events of mass effect 3 and after.

Wrex (krogan)

A famed krogan mercenary and bounty hunter, Urdnot Wrex is also one of the last Krogan Battlemasters: rare individuals who combine powerful biotic abilities with the devastating firepower of advanced weaponry. A long-lived krogan who has had many adventures, Wrex has heard of Commander Shepard during his travels, and respects the Commander as a fellow warrior.

Despite his chosen path of violence and killing for credits, Wrex is deeply concerned with the fate of his people after the genophage, and is one of the few planning for a new krogan future.

Now leading the future of the Krogan in Tuchanka.

Miranda Lawson (human)

Miranda Lawson is a human Cerberus Officer. Miranda is very well traveled and has many contacts, extending from Citadel space and the Terminus Systems, to as far as the hostile Nemean Abyss. Her vast network of contacts may be explained by the fact Miranda is a known Cerberus operative, one who still has friends — or at least friends of friends — in the Alliance military. She has served at various times as a contact for Jacob Taylor and a member of Commander Shepard's crew. Now has no relationship with Cerberus, as she helped commander Shepard finish them.

Jack (Human)

Jack, also known as Subject Zero and Jacqueline Nought, is a notorious criminal whose crimes include piracy, kidnapping, vandalism and murder. She is also a biotic, possibly one of the most powerful human biotics alive, and is considered so dangerous that she was kept in cryogenic stasis after she was caught. She is a potential romance interest for a male Shepard. Now a teacher for the defunct school of Biotics.

James Vega (human)

Lieutenant James Vega is a human Systems Alliance Marine and a member of Commander Shepard's squad in 2186. While Vega is an experienced soldier, he is unfamiliar with the seedy underbelly and political workings of the galaxy. James Vega is tasked to escort Shepard to an Alliance defense committee hearing, but the hearing is interrupted when the Reapers attack Earth. Vega and Ashley Williams/Kaidan Alenko (depending on who survived Virmire) retrieve the Normandy SR-2 and extract Shepard. Voluntarily staying behind to help organize a resistance, Anderson convinces Shepard to leave Earth to seek help from the Citadel Council. Vega is displeased on hearing this and wants to stay behind as well; Shepard overrules him with the stark military logic of the plan, upsetting Vega who nonetheless lets the matter drop for now. Now part of the Normandy crew, and officially and N7 operative.

Ashley Williams (human)

Ashley Madeline Williams is a human soldier who served in the Systems Alliance as a Gunnery Chief in the 2nd Frontier Division on Eden Prime, and was later assigned to Commander Shepard's squad after the geth attack on Eden Prime. Born on April 14th, 2158[1] on the colony world Sirona in the 61 Ursae Majoris system, Ashley comes from a large family that includes a long line of Alliance soldiers: her great-grandmother, her grandfather, and her father all swore the Oath of Service.

Following her family's tradition, Ashley enlisted in the Alliance Navy as a marine after high school and was assigned to the Recruit Training Depot in Macapá, Brazil. During training, Chief Williams was certified proficient with the standard-issue M7 Lancer assault rifle and light to standard-weight combat hardsuits. She also completed certification in zero-gravity combat aboard the Rakesh Sharma Orbital Platform in Earth geosynchronous orbit. For Hostile Environment Assault Training, she was assigned to Fort Charles Upham on Titan, one of Saturn's moons, where she was awarded a commendation for her bold assault technique in a field exercise simulating an attack on turian point defense emplacements. Now Lieutenant-Commander of the alliance, and still a member of the Normandy. (if alive)

Kaiden alenko (human)

Kaidan Alenko is a human Sentinel and a Systems Alliance Marine. While serving aboard the SSV Normandy, he is a Staff Lieutenant and head of the ship's Marine detail. He's also an initial member of Commander Shepard's squad. Kaidan is a biotic wired with the controversial L2 implants, which are known to cause severe neurological damage to the user. However, he is fortunate enough to only suffer from occasional severe migraines. Kaidan was born in 2151 into a family already familiar with space: his father served in the Alliance military. After his mother was downwind of a transport crash in Singapore, Kaidan was exposed in utero to element zero and beat the odds, gaining biotic potential instead of terminal brain cancer. At the time little was known about human biotics, but when the possibilities became better understood, a company called Conatix Industries was set up to track accidental eezo exposures. Children who showed enough potential to be worth augmenting with implants were 'encouraged' to attend BAaT (Biotic Acclimation and Temperance Training) which was conducted at Gagarin Station and nicknamed 'Brain Camp' by its attendees. As Kaidan tells Shepard, "[b]unch of guys in suits show up at your door after school. Next thing you know, you're out on Jump Zero." Now lieutenant-Commander and still part of the Normandy. (If alive)

Joker (human)

Flight Lieutenant Jeff "Joker" Moreau is the pilot of the SSV Normandy. Joker is an excellent pilot and confident to the point of arrogance, wasting no time in pointing out his prowess to others. He's quick to ensure everyone knows his many accomplishments and commendations were all earned, and not due to charity for his medical problems. Born in 2155, Joker's upbringing and career have been colored by his health. Joker has a moderate to severe case of Vrolik syndrome, which causes extreme brittleness in the bones; he was born with severe fractures to his legs and even with modern medicine he finds walking nearly impossible, relying on crutches and leg braces. Joker spent his early life on Arcturus Station because of his mother's job there as a civilian contractor, and grew up around ships. When he was old enough to enlist, he joined the Alliance Navy. He got his nickname from his flight school instructor, due to the fact that he rarely smiled — he was working too hard. By the end of his training, however, Joker surpassed the other students and even his instructors. "They all got their asses kicked by the sickly kid with the creaky little legs. One guess who was smiling at graduation." Now the best pilot in the galaxy, and still the pilot of the Normandy.

EDI(A.I)

The Enhanced Defense Intelligence, or EDI (pronounced 'Ee-Dee' [ˈiːdiː]), is an AI created by Cerberus and installed aboard the Normandy SR-2. She is represented visually by a holographic blue sphere and aurally with a feminine voice at various terminals throughout the ship where she can provide basic information about the Normandy and Cerberus. EDI is a Quantum Blue Box type AI that functions as the electronic warfare defense for the Normandy SR-2. Because of the potential danger of a rogue AI, she has been given behavioral blocks and cannot interface with the ship's systems. She also serves as the Illusive Man's eyes and ears on the Normandy, monitoring the many listening devices on board and sending regular reports to him. After the acquisition of the Reaper IFF and its integration with the Normandy's systems, a virus disables the ship and enables the Collectors to board and capture the entire crew. While Shepard and the squad are away, Joker grants EDI access to the ship's full array of systems, allowing them to escape. EDI gains full control of the Normandy once she is unshackled, though she admits the Normandy's efficiency is improved with human resources. After this incident, EDI establishes an "equitable working relationship" with Joker, who starts calling her "she" and "her" rather than an "it". If Shepard comments on Joker's flirting, EDI humorously explains her relationship with Joker is purely platonic rather than hormonally-induced courtship behavior. Havign acquired the body of Doctor Eva, she know has a physical body that can accompany you in missions.
