Dania and Ruslan are friends; they became friends as children at the Orthodox school where their parents sent them, and when they grew up, they joined the same church.

Although the boys were servants of God and were always faithful to their faith, sometimes they sinned lightly, Rus even more often than Danila.

Late one night, when the church was closed, Kashin stayed overnight at the church because of business. Ruslan was supposed to go home, but suddenly the door to the room he shared with Dania opened. A joyful Tushentsov appeared in the doorway, looking at her with all his seriousness, holding a thick book. The young man declared it was a book of spells.

Danila didn't believe it at first. But curiosity got the better of him. They each chose a spell, both confused about what they meant or what it would do, because everything was written in some ancient, incomprehensible language. Ruslan chose a spell with the most interesting picture, though he didn't understand what it said. It turned out the spell stated that if a person had committed more than five deadly sins, after casting the spell, they would become a demon. Rus, of course, had committed almost all the sins, so the spell worked. Dania chose a spell that, judging by the picture, seemed to be related to nature and animals. Kashin's spell worked completely differently: the animal a person thought of first was the one they would become. So...

Waking up early in the morning, Ruslan felt out of place; he turned out to be a demon. And Danila turned into a red lamb. Both spells worked. Kashin turned into a lamb because during the night he thought about what kind of ram Russ was, and so he transformed. Even though Danila became an animal, he could still speak human. Ruslan, however, having become a demon, changed; he had red skin, a tail, and horns.

Due to their new problems, the boys missed the service, and so that other city residents would not see them, they decided to wait out the day in the field and think about what to do next.

Tushenzov was wearing a black T-shirt, shorts, and sneakers, all his tattoos visible. Lamb-Danya lay next to him.
