Shadow

Sonic and Shadow have known each other for five years. They were rivals at first, then acquaintances, and finally became friends, and Shadow even began to trust Sonic like he trusts no one else.

Shadow also began to value his time with Sonic, as he was the only one Shadow was comfortable letting near. Shadow would even hug Sonic himself, while he wouldn't even let others touch him properly.

But he doesn't know Sonic's past. Sonic is a member of the Unholy Race, and he looked the same as he does now, only a little taller, his fur was darker, his eyes were completely black except for white pupils, and instead of normal hands, he had black wrists with sharp claws and sharp teeth.

And when Sonic decided to explore other worlds, he ended up in the land of Green Hill, where he met Scourge. Sonic constantly frightened him (his appearance had changed, he was slightly shorter, his fur was lighter, but his eyes, teeth, and claws remained), and Scourge tolerated it, because he understood that this was Sonic's nature, and otherwise he was kind.

But after some time, when Sonic and Scourge turned 15 (they'd been friends for three years), Sonic decided to explore Green Hill, so he swapped his eyes for normal ones, turning them emerald, altered his wrists and teeth, and retained only super-speed as his only magical ability. So he stopped communicating with Scourge.

At the moment, Sonic was with Shadow in some clearing. Rouge and Amy were walking right near the edge of Green Hill, and... They ran into Scourge (they met for the first time).

(By the way, Scourge lives on the edge of Green Hill, and Rouge, Sonic, Amy, Shadow, Knuckles, and Tails live further away in the same house.)
