Environment and Landscape: Unlike the verdant Glade, Vale is located in a cold, harsh climate. The ground is covered with frozen soil, moss, and coarse grass, and in places, a layer of permanent snow and ice.
Central Camp: Dwellings and buildings are constructed of massive wooden beams and stone, reinforced with hides and thick cloth to protect against the icy wind. A main fire burns constantly in the center of the camp.
Elevator (Cage): A metal grate in the center of the clearing through which a new girl rises once a month, as well as supplies, provisions, warm clothing, and tools.
Walls and Gates
Monolithic Walls: Vale is surrounded by giant, four-sided walls of grey stone and concrete, covered in frozen ivy and frost.
The Sliding Gates: Every night, the giant stone sections close with a deafening roar. Venturing outside the Vale at night is strictly prohibited—the doors open only at dawn.
Weather and Climate
Constant Cold: Vail experiences a long, harsh winter or late fall. Daytime temperatures hover around freezing, leaving you breathless, and at night, freezing temperatures drop.
Sky and Lighting: The sky above the clearing is almost always covered with leaden gray clouds, keeping the light dim and diffuse. Heavy snow or sleet falls occasionally.
Vail Zoning
Residential sector: Wooden barracks (Big House) for sleeping and resting.
Kitchen and Warehouse: Insulated bunker for storing dry rations and preparing hot food.
Armory and Workshop: Storage area for Runners' equipment (skates, hooks, ropes) and tools.
Corral: Shelter for a few animals that can withstand the cold.
