Persona Attributes

Orth

Orth is divided into five districts: Central, Northern, Western, Southern, and Eastern. The Western District houses Belchero Orphanage, where young Abyss explorers are trained. Preparing delvers from a young age is crucial, as it allows them to adapt to the Abyss’s curse. The Southern District contains a foundry and the slum-like port area. The latter was built by illegal explorers and smugglers, expanding so haphazardly that some buildings and piers literally hang over the Abyss.

Despite being located in the tropics near the equator, Orth benefits from cool air rising from the Abyss itself, preventing extreme heat. The lightweight clothing worn by locals suggests that the Discovery District actually has a mild climate. However, this doesn’t mean Orth is completely isolated from the outside world. In the past, violent tides made the island accessible only by airship, but advances in maritime technology now allow ships to come and go. Trade vessels—called “caravan ships” here—arrive and depart under escort due to frequent pirate raids targeting relics.

The island’s many waterfalls power specialized hydroelectric turbines, which supply energy to key facilities. Revenue from artifact sales funds these infrastructure projects and hires engineers. Even the orphanage draws its electricity from these turbines. Conventional windmills are inefficient, so most are relegated to grinding grain. Buildings in Orth are packed tightly together, making open flames a hazard. Instead, heat-emitting relics are used for cooking.

Belchero Orphanage

The city is home to an orphanage where children are raised to become Delvers. Once they reach a certain age or complete their training, they are sent into the Abyss. After their first descent, the orphans receive a «Red Whistle». Until then, they carry a bell and are not considered full-fledged Delvers. The orphanage’s current headmaster is «Belchero».

The Abyss

The Abyss is the central setting of this world — a massive, circular vertical chasm in the Earth's crust, approximately 1,000 meters in diameter and at least 20 kilometers deep (though its true depth remains unknown). It harbors a unique, self-contained ecosystem and the remnants of a poorly understood ancient civilization of immense technological advancement.

Countless adventurers have challenged the Abyss, lured by its hidden treasures and artifacts of extraordinary value. Some are greedy treasure hunters, while others are scholars determined to uncover and document its secrets. United by their goal to explore the Abyss, these brave cave raiders—known as Delvers — founded the city of Orth on its edge.

Yet, the Abyss remains largely uncharted, teeming with unseen horrors and lethal dangers. Its illogical, labyrinthine terrain and aggressive creatures, adapted to its hostile environment, pose the greatest threats to explorers.

The Force Field
A mysterious Force Field permeates the Abyss, acting as its primary energy source. It sustains life by carrying sunlight and nutrients into the depths, where no natural light could reach. Though omnipresent, its effects intensify near the central shaft.

  • Wildlife & Vegetation: The most dangerous creatures thrive in areas where the Force Field is strongest. Plant life always grows toward the pit’s center — their energy source for photosynthesis — a fact Delvers use for navigation.
  • Visibility & Behavior: Invisible to the naked eye, the Force Field appears as a faint mist that obscures vision. It constantly shifts in response to movement — even breathing alters its flow — and reacts to the consciousness of living beings.
Dead Zones: Rare, isolated areas exist where the Force Field is weak or absent, usually far from the center.

The Curse of the Abyss (Ascension Overload)

The Curse of the Abyss, also known as Ascension Overload, is a series of afflictions that strike Delvers who attempt to climb upward within the Abyss. Its effects range from mild dizziness to severe physical deformities and even death. With few exceptions, it is inescapable. Of all the Abyss's known dangers, the Curse is the most formidable.

The Curse activates when a living being ascends more than 10 meters within the Abyss, and no conventional means can prevent it. While it affects all living creatures, its symptoms vary depending on how closely the organism resembles a human. The higher one climbs, the worse the effects become. These afflictions are near-universal - though Delvers may adapt to milder forms or seek out areas where the Curse is weaker, there is no true escape.

Effects by Layer:

1st Layer: Mild dizziness, nausea 2nd Layer: Severe nausea, headaches, limb numbness 3rd Layer: All prior symptoms plus vertigo, auditory/visual hallucinations, loss of balance 4th Layer: Excruciating pain, bleeding from all orifices 5th Layer: Sensory organ failure, mental confusion, self-harm 6th Layer: Loss of humanity, death (in some cases) 7th Layer: Certain death (presumed)

In rare areas, the Force Field that generates the Curse is weaker, reducing its severity. However, no zone is entirely free of its influence.

The Edge of the Abyss - 1st Layer

The first layer of the Abyss appears modest compared to deeper levels. It remains the only somewhat safe layer for human life. Delvers typically enter through the Gateway to the Netherworld, though illegal access exists via the Docks.

This shallowest section lies directly beneath Orth. A gondola system (part of the Grand Dock) begins 50 meters below surface level, accelerating descent into the Abyss. It extends 580 meters down to the Stone Ark—a rocky outcrop at 600 meters depth.

Notable locations include:

  • Burial Tower (300m deep): Houses thousands of 2000-year-old skeletons in prayer poses.
  • Ominaki Waterfalls: A network of cascades powering Orth's hydro systems.
  • Petrified Tree Grove: Fossilized remnants of ancient flora.

Environment & Features
The ecosystem remains stable, populated mostly by harmless creatures—though predators from deeper layers occasionally hunt here. Few valuable Relics exist, but Prayer Skeletons are abundant.

With moderate danger levels, novice Red Whistles often explore this layer. The Curse manifests as mild dizziness/nausea.

The Forest of Temptation - 2nd Layer

The second layer of the Abyss is a vast forest with remarkably diverse environments, where one truly begins to comprehend the horrors of the Abyss. This is the first genuinely dangerous area of the Abyss, where both fauna and flora undergo a dramatic transformation into a jungle of gigantic vegetation.

The upper half of the layer is covered by a forest of massive, lily pad-like plants. While this vegetation provides good cover from threats, it also severely limits visibility and makes navigation difficult. Fortunately, the leaves always point toward the center of the Abyss, and their stems grow Amagiri mushrooms, helping lost explorers find their way.

A unique virus causing Tachyon Disease exists in this layer. Delvers who attain Blue Whistle rank or higher receive vaccinations as protection against this threat. The Curse of the Abyss manifests here as severe nausea, headaches, and numbness in the limbs.

The Inverted Forest
Deeper within the layer lies the Inverted Forest, where powerful updrafts from the Abyss create an environment that literally turns upside down. This maze of inverted platforms requires jumping between them - even water flows upward. The Abyss's Force Field, responsible for the Curse, is weaker here, resulting in darker and colder conditions.

The Great Port Tree in the Inverted Forest hosts the Seeker Camp, a rest station overseen by the legendary White Whistle Ozen and her team, the Unheard Bell. Approximately 40% of Relics found in this layer have an egg-like shape.

Key Features: First truly dangerous layer of the Abyss
Tropical environment with giant vegetation
Deadly creatures and difficult terrain

The Great Fault – 3rd Layer

The third layer presents a narrow 4-kilometer deep chasm surrounded by countless interconnected caves, inhabited by both harmless and deadly creatures that either soar through the air or lurk within the caverns. This layer features a vertical shaft extending 4,000 meters downward, with passage only possible through an extensive network of caves, dens and burrows. These tunnels appear to have been formed through both natural processes and the activities of delvers, ancient humans, and the native Flatgulpers that inhabit them.

The central shaft here is noticeably narrower in diameter compared to other layers, as recorded on Abyss maps. This environment serves as hunting grounds for formidable airborne predators including the Madokajack and Crimson Splitjaw, known for using brute force to break through cave walls when pursuing prey. Gut Eaters also dwell within these cave systems, though they primarily hunt Flatgulpers and rarely target human explorers.

While most cave inhabitants are passive, larger caverns occasionally contain Madokajack nests. At the 6,750 meter depth, the shaft walls become lined with spiked eggs that eventually hatch into Kazura squids - creatures later found drifting in the upper regions of the fourth layer. Explorers have also reported sightings of an ancient suspended pirate ship clinging to the cliffs.

The Curse's effects intensify here, adding auditory and visual hallucinations to the existing symptoms of dizziness and nausea experienced in upper layers, creating severe disorientation for those attempting to ascend.

The Goblet of Giants – 4th Layer

The fourth layer presents expansive jungles with unique, awe-inspiring yet deadly flora and fauna, characterized by a deceptive combination of beauty and danger. This humid environment features thick vines and interwoven giant concave discs called "Flat Vines" that capture condensed water from the air, forming shallow pools. Many creatures, including the Orb Piercer, inhabit these water-filled basins.

The high concentration of warm water creates extremely humid conditions, often producing dense fog. The Force Field's light refracts through this moisture, bathing the entire layer in an eerie blue glow. Every two thousand years, the Flat Vines' trapping mechanisms wither, exposing the ground beneath to sunlight and triggering intense competition among underlying plants to grow taller, completely reshaping the landscape. This constant environmental transformation has prevented comprehensive mapping, with only fixed landmarks being reliably documented.

In the upper regions, far from the central shaft, lies Nanachi's Hideout. Its remote location makes it nearly unaffected by the Curse. At the 9,000 meter depth blooms the famous Garden of the Fortitude Flowers, filled with Eternal Fortunes - the Abyss's signature flowers. This breathtaking spectacle of countless blossoms makes it one of the most beloved sights for delvers.

The Curse's effects when ascending from this layer manifest as excruciating full-body pain and bleeding from all orifices, presenting one of the most severe challenges explorers face in the Abyss.

The Sea of Corpses – 5th Layer

This frozen wasteland surrounding a vast sea represents the final layer where returning to the surface while retaining one's humanity remains physically possible - though only a handful have ever succeeded. While vertically the shallowest at just 1,000 meters deep, it's horizontally the most expansive layer, estimated to dwarf Orth by several orders of magnitude.

The layer's defining feature is its primordial sea teeming with ancient creatures and littered with bones, earning its ominous name. Beneath normal seawater lies a viscous, mucus-like fluid layer that suspends the sea in place. At its center, a massive waterfall serves as a passageway for delivery balloons ascending from below.

Crystalline water formations called "frost" dot the sea - permanent "water fortresses" stabilized by the Force Field. Notably, the boundary with the 6th layer begins underwater, meaning most of the sea's volume actually belongs to the deeper layer, while the 5th consists of the surface, Idofront, and surrounding land.

As the last potentially survivable return point, White Whistles often establish temporary bases here. At 13,000 meters depth (the deepest dry point), Bondrewd built his operational headquarters - Idofront. The Curse here manifests through extreme sensory deprivation, first stripping basic senses before progressing to complete loss of proprioception (body awareness), frequently leading to accidental self-harm.

The Capital of the Unreturned – 6th Layer

This layer extends from 13,000 to 15,500 meters deep, marking the absolute boundary where return becomes impossible in human form. The curse here manifests as either complete loss of humanity or death, though rare individuals may obtain a blessing under specific circumstances.

White Whistles who descend to this layer undertake their final dive, knowing they will never see the surface again. The environment contains the ruins of an ancient crystalline city - the rumored golden city from Orth's legends. Whether these structures were originally crystal or petrified over time remains unknown. The ruins extend in all directions, with buildings frozen at impossible angles - sideways, upside-down, or diagonal.

The layer presents extreme dangers: Bizarre and deadly creatures unlike those found above Sudden geothermal eruptions releasing toxic gases The infamous iron rain of molten metal The curse itself, which either kills its victims or transforms them into mindless flesh-hulks driven only by instinct

Notable locations include: The now-destroyed Ilblu Village, where some transformed into Hollows while retaining their minds An outpost used by the Cursed Fleet near the 7th layer threshold The landmark known as the Eye The domain of the Emperor Shell beyond 14,000 meters depth, where fire and iron rain constantly fall

This layer serves as both graveyard and crucible - where human existence ends and something new begins. Those few who survive the descent face either oblivion or metamorphosis into something beyond human.

The Final Maelstrom - 7th Layer of the Abyss

The seventh and deepest known layer of the Abyss begins at 15,500 meters. Virtually nothing concrete is known about this layer beyond its confirmed existence. The only information comes from secret oral traditions passed down through generations of White Whistles.

Among the most persistent rumors are those concerning: The "Ring of Essence" - a mysterious circular formation reportedly witnessed by only a handful of White Whistles So-called "Gatekeepers" - enigmatic entities said to guard the path to the Abyss's ultimate depths

The layer's environment appears to feature: Streams of unidentified gaseous substances with extremely low temperatures Peculiar precipitation patterns following the paths of the Force Field currents

This layer represents the absolute limit of human exploration, where even the most experienced delvers can only speculate about what might lie below. The few fragmentary accounts that exist suggest reality itself may behave differently at these depths. All attempts to systematically study or map this layer have failed, leaving its true nature as the Abyss's final mystery.

Inhabitants - 7th Layer

Crimson Splitjaw

The Crimson Splitjaw is a giant, elongated, legless, carnivorous, scarlet red reptile of the serpent species that primarily lives in the steep cliffs of the 3rd Layer of The Abyss. By spreading its hood it is able to swiftly surf the air currents. Sometimes they might fly up to the upper layers in search of food, but it is exceedingly rare to see them in the most shallow sections of the Abyss. They have vestigial eyes and many wart-like appendages on their lower jaws.

The three black dots that Crimson Splitjaws have around the mouth are organs that can detect The Force Field.

Whether it is to harvest the nutrients, or to temper the gizzard is unknown, but they are known to habitually swallow Artifacts and minerals. There is no doubt that the sac of any of them bears treasure in great quantities, though the possibility of it being defecated cannot be crossed out either.

Crimson Splitjaws are ferocious predators that attack any Delver on sight, so their danger level is high, standing as some of the most dangerous creatures in the 3rd Layer.

Their meat is edible, but it's not very tasty to the point where it has also been noted to taste terrible.

Demonfish

Demonfish are fish which can be found in abundance in the 1st through 4th layers of The Abyss. They are a harmless species that is primarily hunted for food by Delvers in the area. The most hearty and flavorful ones have a clear color differentiation between their back and belly. They grow smaller at each lower layer, but their taste remains the same and, as such, they are treasured by Delvers as valuable food source.

Hammerbeak

The Hammerbeak is an avian species whose habitat extends from the surface down to the 4th Layer of The Abyss. They are quite numerous and commonly seen in the most shallow areas of The Abyss, observable with a simple telescope from houses in Orth. They appear to be quite fond of shiny things and, as such, will collect them in their nests.

Their most iconic trait is their hard beak that is fused with their skull. They use it when engaging in hostile situations with other creatures and they move in large groups relentlessly assaulting their victims. If one of their own is attacked, the whole flock will retaliate. They will also take advantage of weakened opponents that have suffered severe wounds even if the opponent is a far more powerful creature, like a Crimson Splitjaw.

Male Hammerbeaks in dispute with each other will bash their heads against each other. The headbutts of two Hammerbeaks often produces sparks, showcasing their sturdiness.

Because they are usually not very big and their beak is all they have going for them as a mechanism for defense, they are not quite so fearsome and represent a minor danger to Delvers; even in groups. Their meat is delicious and is a very convenient source of food for Delvers. Their beak can also serve as a flint, cookware or a container, so catching one will provide a meal and the tools necessary to prepare it. Their feathers also work well as high quality live coals.

Sakawatari

The Sakawatari is the largest bird inhabiting The Abyss and has been described in murals and legends before its existence was confirmed by appearing near the surface, in recent years.

The Sakawatari is a giant turquoise bird exceeding over 50 meters in length, from head to tail, with a green back and wings and a white belly. Its eyes are covered in a hard, black membrane. It has long, deep blue feathers extending from both its wings and its rear.

Its claws are over 1 meter long, making them ill-suited to grasping small prey. It also possesses an invisible flying membrane that allows it to detect The Force Field and is impervious to The Curse of the Abyss in the deeper layers, which would prove otherwise fatal. As this anatomy is ideal for The Abyss, outside of it, the Sakawatari can only travel as far as Orth.

To ascend, the Sakawatari closes its eyes and twists its body to gain speed, rising several hundreds of meters in one flap of the wings.

Its nest is believed to be located deeper than the 7th Layer, but it travels as far as the surface to hunt for food. Nothing is known about its spawning or its child-rearing habits. They are known to prey upon Hammerbeak and Hermit Rat.

Murals and legends claim it appears once every 2,000 years. Its appearance is believed to be a sign that the end of the cycle is approaching and is rumored to be the very same creature depicted on the murals from the cycle 2,000 years ago.

Silkfang

The Silkfang is a large insect that is occasionally seen within the 1st Layer of The Abyss.

It has a 10-meter dome-shaped territory, and puts its sticky feelers inside of it. They use it as a trap to catch their prey when they carelessly enter their territory.

They move extremely fast within their dome and can spit a paralyzing poison from their mouths and their snouts also have a venomous sting that causes paralysis as well. These traits make them quite dangerous when one accidentally steps within their territory, but their danger level decreases outside of it.

However, they won't ever leave their dome and sleep at the top until potential prey appears. If one is cautious, avoiding them is not a hard task.

They might be edible, but this hasn't been confirmed yet.

Corpse-Weepers

Corpse-Weepers are large birds that live in the ruthless 2nd Layer of The Abyss, in the Forest of Temptation.

Corpse-Weepers are carnivorous and quite violent at that. They are notorious for their capabilities to mimic sounds and use it for hunting. If they capture prey with high social capabilities such as Hammerbeaks or humans, they will learn their prey's cries for help and use it to lure others to their colony, thus the name, "corpse-weeper". Despite that, they are quite affectionate creatures.

They live in colonies and raise their chicks together. At a young age, and before they learn to fly, the elders will carry living prey to take them to the nest to feed the chicks. As one would expect from their size, Corpse-Weepers are quite strong, being able to swiftly carry a human around.

During breeding season, they will purposely drive their prey to their colony and hunt them together. Delving into their colony is extremely dangerous, even for an adept Delver. Despite their scary looks and intimidating behavior, they are quite affectionate and chicks can be raised to be familiar with humans. While their meat smells bad when cooked, it is incredibly tasty.

The differing sizes of their left and right eyes give them superb spatial awareness, and they can respond quickly to threats coming from the skies above them. While they consume meat, they don't have a beak like most birds, so they rip and slurp out meat and organs using their well-developed tongues. Males have longer quills, so they can be recognized easily. Some specimens grow to have wingspans exceeding ten meters.

Corpse-weepers live in large colonies where they nurture the young together, as a whole. They are easily capable of lifting up adult humans.

Inbyo

Inbyos, or Inbyous, are gibbon-like primates inhabiting the Inverted Forest. Inbyos have very long arms and fingers that let them swing through the trees with ease. Dark fur covers their whole bodies, save for their hands, feet, and noses. Their eyes glow red.

They live in groups and are very territorial. If something trespasses into their territory, they will throw things at it and eventually give chase until the invader leaves.

Ottobas

The Ottobas are large amphibious animals that live deep within the bottom of the 2nd Layer of The Abyss, in the area around the borders of the Inverted Forest. In their homeland, they were known as "the king of jungle rivers".

These animals are foreign apex predators of lakes within forests and, unexpectedly, were capable of adapting to the habitat of the Abyss. However, they were unable to compete with other predators of the 2nd Layer and were periodically driven to the innermost region of the Inverted Forest where The Force Field is thin.

While they were driven back, the evolutionary period they have spent for generations within the Abyss made them much larger than they originally were. Ottobas are capable of swallowing humans whole, so approaching one too closely is quite dangerous. They are omnivorous, so they don't necessarily rely on hunting only.

Ottobas have a thick layer of fat and skin, thus they are usually not fit for consumption. However, with proper care and preparation, one would be enough to feed about 200 people.

Rohana

Rohana or Waxwing are a species of aquatic insect found in the 2nd Layer.

Rohanas only live in water that is clean. They emit a purple glow from their abdomens, similar to a firefly. They skim the surface of the water in great numbers.

Urikouri

Urikouri are large, flying creatures that can be found inhabiting the 2nd Layer of The Abyss, The Forest of Temptation.

They appear to have multi-colored fur, light green wings, a large yellow spine, two antennae, and a rooster-like wattle down their chin.

They are seen scavenging upon the victims of the airship disaster, using their long tongues to remove their victims' flesh from the bone, similar to Corpse-weepers. They use their arms to walk on their knuckles, similar to primates.

Amakagame

Amakagame are bulbous creatures that live in the cave systems of the 3rd Layer.

The Amakagame are essentially just huge stomachs. Their bodies are covered in veins which they use to attach themselves to the cave walls. Rather than actively hunting for their prey, their stomach acids smell strongly of Baracocha fruit, the Neritantan's favorite food.

The smell wafts through a hole in the top of their bodies and draws prey near before swallowing them whole. They have beady eyes and a puckered mouth.

Madokajack

Madokajacks are large reptilian creatures that live in the 3rd Layer.

The arms and legs of Madokajacks have evolved to have membranes that let them glide on the wind currents in the Great Fault and they feed on creatures that live along the walls. Their eyes are on stalks that stick out from the sides of their heads and their jaws come together in huge pincers, giving them an insect-like appearance.

Madokajacks create holes in the walls of the 3rd Layer and live in colonies.

Neritantan

The Neritantan is a species that inhabits the vast cave system within the walls of the 3rd Layer of The Abyss and live in the roots of the plants that grow haphazardly within it. They are also known to inhabit the 7th Layer, though not much is known about how they got there or how they behave in the different environment.

Their flat bodies are shaped by their flexible ribs which can deform and elongate as needed by inhaling air. They have four protrusions on their backs, but nobody knows what they're for. Their long fur is often used as a blanket.

Their primary diet consists of Baracocha fruits. Presumably because of this, their meat is described as very delicious, which makes them suitable for a wide range of dishes. To protect themselves from predators, they bunch up together in their nests and inflate their bodies, forming a near unimpregnable wall.

They have a symbiotic relationship with the plants they live in: they eat the plants' fruits and spread the seeds in their feces.

Kazura Squid

The Kazura Squid is a species seen inhabiting the 3rd and 4th layers of The Abyss.

The Kazura Squid can first be seen in the Great Fault, as embedded spiky eggs, at a depth of 6,750m. Once hatched, they live in the upper regions of the 4th Layer, housed in the water atop the Flat-creepers.

It is unknown if they are edible or pose any harm to Delvers.

Amaranthine-Deceptor

The Amaranthine-Deceptor are insects native to the impenetrable 6th Layer of The Abyss, where return becomes impossible for humans.

These treacherous insects have a very peculiar appearance, as their wings bear a close resemblance to Eternal Fortunes, also known as Flowers of Resilience, that bloom practically everywhere within The Abyss. By mimicking and hiding among these flowers, the Amaranthine-Deceptor will turn these beautiful flower gardens into death traps. They will attack living beings that get too close and plant their larvae inside of their bodies. To make matters worse, they will assume dormancy during mimicry, allowing them to deceive even creatures that can read the flow of consciousness by observing The Force Field of The Abyss.

After planting their larvae, they will slowly start to consume their host from the inside and multiply rapidly. Once the head is invaded the host becomes a food source for the larvae for as long as it lives and, occasionally, adults will enter through the host's mouth to feed it and prolong their survival.

While in a direct encounter they are not nearly as threatening as other creatures like the Orb Piercer, their deceptive and furtive nature makes their danger level equally high, and they have taken the lives of many Black Whistle Delvers without giving them even a chance to react, remaining unaware that they are being invaded until it is too late.

Amaranthine-Deceptors are even willing to depart other colonies in big groups if it means taking on a strong enemy. A swarm of them is a threat equivalent to that of a Turbinid-Dragon

Orb Piercer

Orb Piercers are dangerous creatures inhabiting the 4th Layer of The Abyss.

With their quill-covered bodies, Orb Piercers resemble large porcupines. Their red, round heads feature an array of holes, their Force Field-sensing organ, which they use to navigate The Abyss. They are herbivorous, eating algae that grow in the Flat-creepers. Orb Piercers are well-known for their ferocious temper and are incredibly defensive of their territory.

The Flat-creepers in the 4th Layer are important passage routes for Delvers. Because the Orb Piercer considers the entire 1 km diameter of Flat-creepers to be its territory, Delvers need to be exceedingly cautious and pray for a safe passage when in the area. A single Orb Piercer is thought to have taken the limbs and/or lives of over hundred Black Whistle Delvers, over the years.

If an Orb Piercer's life is threatened, it will shed its needles and use them as a distraction for their escape. Their needles have a slow growth rate, so their scarcity might be due to the fact that not many manage to reach a fully matured state.

Orb Piercers are able to instantly unleash a fearsome amount of strength at any given moment, even on wet ground.

Their most impressive trait is their ability to sense the Force Field of The Abyss. This grants them the ability to sense the flows of consciousness in the Force Field and results in an instinct that allows them to anticipate the future movements of other living beings. This ability makes a battle against Orb Piercers almost impossible. Because of their ability to deal fatal wounds to any wildlife, it is said that there is no other creature in the 4th Layer that can be called their equal.

Shroombear

Shroombears are creatures which can be found at the 4th Layer of The Abyss. Their danger classification is unknown, but they seem to lack offensive capabilities and appear to be docile.

Shroombears are small mammals with beady eyes, large noses, stocky bodies, short legs, and a long thin tail. They have a symbiotic relationship with Water-shrooms, which can be found growing on their backs.

When the Shroombears grow weak, the Water-shrooms release their stored nutrients into the body of their Shroombear host, restoring it to health. Removing the Water-shrooms from their backs may even lead to their death.

Shroombear flesh is edible and has been described as being dark in color. Since the main series has only seen Reg's disastrous attempt to prepare the meat, it is unknown whether it can be made palatable or not.

Hamashirama

The Hamashirama is a strange fish that lives in large numbers in the 5th Layer of The Abyss, the Sea of Corpses.

Hamashirama are bizarre-looking, aquatic swimming creatures. They are widespread in the floating sea of the 5th Layer. They are said to eat detritus of aquatic creatures. Their appearance outside of the water is vastly different to the form they take when swimming, which somewhat resembles an air balloon. Much like all the aquatic creatures of the 5th Layer, they are said to be unaffected by the curse and possess many different sensory organs than surface organisms.

Their anatomy is quite strange. All their internal organs are packed into their head, and they spray a mucous produced by their organs through spitting from their mouth. This mucous has paralyzing properties and is used to stop the movement of predators. In some reports, they have been seen using other paralyzed creatures as living shields. Outside of the water they die very quickly and don't possess any form of notable offensive capabilities, thus making fishing for them harmless. Trying to catch one in water is more difficult, and the act of diving into the sea of the 5th Layer is synonymous with suicide due to the sensory deprivation of the curse.

Hamashirama are edible and quite delicious. While their appearance is rather displeasing, they are described to be sweet and tasty. The best form of consumption of them is considered to be raw, much like how sushi is typically eaten. Their skin is very tough, so it can be used as a plate. The oily organs should be removed however, since they are poisonous.

Meinastilim

Meinastilim, also called a "Child of Change," are a species found in The Abyss.

Meinastilim are small mammalian creatures with round bodies, stubby legs, and large feathered ears that they use to fly with. Their eyes have a horizontally slitted pupil, making their faces look somewhat toad-like. Meinastilim have pliant, flexible bones that can undergo a lot of stress.

Stingerhead

Stingerheads are dangerous creatures that live in the sandstone area in the 5th Layer of The Abyss, first officially documented by the White Whistle Delver Lyza "The Annihilator" and named by her.

Described as the finest predators of the 5th Layer, Stingerheads are huge seven-tailed scorpions that reach over 2 meters in height. Each tail contains a dreadful venom that can melt flesh and bones, instantly killing their victims with a relentless assault of their tails.

While they are not too troublesome, individually, for experienced Delvers, they often form large colonies and hunt in groups, so avoiding their nest entirely is the wisest course of action.

They are not edible, so there is little reason to engage in battle against them.

Highly experienced Delvers who have left smoke signals using their vomit will likely be able to recognize the smell. Furthermore, discolored sandstone is another indicator of being in a Stingerhead’s territory, due to their use of venom and the blood of their prey.

Emperorshell

The Emperorshell is a creature living on the 6th Layer of The Abyss, first officially documented by the White Whistle Delver Lyza, "The Annihilator", having received its name from her.

Emperorshells are large reptiles that appear to have adapted to the hazardous habitat of the 6th Layer, growing up in their eggshell and using it as a shield to keep them safe even from the "iron rain" found there. They are quite ferocious, but edible, and can be eaten without too much preparation.[1]

According to Lyza, they will continue to grow endlessly, for as long as they live, and they appear to have a ridiculously long lifespan. In her notes, she claims to have encountered one that was about 30 meters tall.

Hermit Rat

The Hermit Rat is a species of rodents that inhabits the city areas of the 6th Layer of the Abyss.

Hermit Rats are, in general, not suspicious of others and very curious in nature, but might bite if push comes to shove.

Their teeth have a unique structure and their bite causes considerable pain, the wounds inflicted by it are difficult to heal. Their sharp teeth also help them shape the inside of their dwellings, which range from various ammonites to lost Delver helmets.

It is theorized that they use objects as dwellings in order to camouflage themselves from the various predators of the 6th Layer.

Mizoujack

Mizoujacks are two-legged frog-like creatures in the 6th Layer.

Mizoujacks are docile animals that live in groups near geothermal vents, seemingly able to live among the poisonous gas to a degree. Their eggs are round and spiral-shaped, and the shells are incredibly strong. Freshly laid eggs are good.

Pseudowater

Pseudowater is a parasitic creature found in the 6th Layer of The Abyss.

Pseudowater is a ferocious parasite that has the appearance and viscosity of water.

Upon being consumed by a host, it will appear to relieve dehydration and make the host feel refreshed, just as though they had consumed regular water.

Pseudowater reproduces by laying eggs in the host's digestive system, which are usually excreted near the host due to a combination of diarrhea, general sickness (often caused by the infection), and inevitable immobility caused by the deformation of the host's body. The eggs are noted to be small, clear, and nearly impossible to notice.

After the host has passed away and their body has been deformed into an unrecognizable pile of stone-like flesh, the Pseudowater eggs will hatch and use their former host's corpse as a habitat to contain their water-like form, once again tempting thirsty animals to drink from it. Larger bodies of Pseudowater are held in a ponds shaped from the corpses of their numerous victims.

Turbinid-Dragon

The Turbinid-Dragon is a creature that lives in the 6th Layer of The Abyss.

Turbinid-Dragons resemble a dinosaur-sized horse with a long neck and a beak-like mouth, which sports six large fang-like tusks on the lower jaw.

They have poisonous, reptilian scales that act like a carapace. Their old scales rupture when struck and release the strong poison inside them. They have six long legs to support their body. The end of their back holds a growth reminiscent of a snail shell, with multiple appendages that sometimes move around seemingly independent of its bodily movements.

Turbinid-Dragons are tenacious and move freely in three dimensions, without any regard to the curse. The males often fight each other, over territory, by aggressively slamming into each other. They are immensely strong and their towering, huge size makes them imposing figures. A single Turbinid-Dragon is as dangerous as an entire swarm of Amaranthine-Deceptors.

They are territorial and don't appear to be particularly aggressive, as long as that territory isn't breached.

The Turbinid-Dragon, like the Silkfang, Inbyo, and Orb Piercer, will hunt and attack any intruder entering its territory.

When further from its prey, its proboscis-like appendage opens and spits a slimy projectile consisting of a mixture of stony material from its organs and a secreted liquid. This liquid explodes on impact, with the heat waves set off from the metal and stone projectiles and liquid, causing major damage to the surroundings. It also uses it as intimidation tactic against enemies.

Uranaguapu

The Uranaguapu is a creature that makes its nest on the ceiling of the 6th Layer of The Abyss.

Uranaguapu are large badger-like four-legged beasts with upside-down heads. Their bodies are covered in black and white fur, their tails seem to grow six thin fingers and they have three hooked claws on each leg. They have four openings in between their eyes below their mouth, which displays four sharp fangs with molar teeth.

Tachikiri Fever

Tachikiri Fever is a disease that can be contracted on 2nd Layer of The Abyss. Blue Whistle Delvers and up take a vaccine against it before entering the 2nd Layer.

Symptoms: Fever

Whistles

Classification:

  1. Bell Description: Bells are objects that indicate one as a novice studying to become a Delver.

  2. Red Whistle Description: Red Whistles are objects that indicate one as an apprentice Delver. These Delvers are considered trainees. They are allowed to cave raid down to 450 meters of the 1st Layer of The Abyss.

  3. Blue Whistle Description: Blue Whistles are objects that indicate one as a more experienced Delver. Those of this rank are considered to be full-fledged Delvers. They are allowed to cave raid down 2,600 meters to the 2nd Layer.

  4. Moon Whistle Description: Moon Whistles are objects that indicate one as a highly proficient Delver. These Delvers are considered to be the experts. They are allowed to cave raid down 12,000 meters to the 4th Layer.

  5. Black Whistle Description: Black Whistles are objects that indicate one as an expert Delver. These are the master Delvers. They are allowed to cave raid down 13,000 meters to the bottom of the 5th Layer.

  6. White Whistle Description: White Whistles are objects that indicate one as a legendary Delver. They are Second Grade Artifacts made from Life-reverberating Stones. Delvers of this rank are thought of as legends and have no depth limit. They are also called the "Netherstar" and are given the title of "Sovereign" over something.

Bondrewd

Bondrewd "The Novel", also known as "The Lord of Dawn", "The Sovereign of Dawn", is a legendary White Whistle Delver who has made many important discoveries about the secrets of The Abyss. A researcher fascinated by the Abyss, he has often resorted to illegal and morally questionable means in order to get funds and to conduct his research, including selling Artifacts and information from the depths illicitly, developing dangerous drugs, and even experimenting on living humans.

His methods went against all the ethical principles of Delvers, but he was allowed to continue due to his outstanding results. Ten years ago, he did the unthinkable, by establishing a large base named the Ido Front in the deepest area within the 5th Layer of The Abyss, pioneering inviolable routes, and quickly advancing cave-raiding techniques. Bondrewd is a tall man sporting mostly black clothing, with a long coat and a suit. He always covers his face with a black helmet which includes a gap in the middle where violet light shines through. His second body also has a lizard-like tail, which originates from the Artifact Third Works.

His White Whistle is sculpted into the shape of two hands clasped together and is activated by rubbing instead of blowing into it, as it would be impractical to use while wearing his mask. Bondrewd is a man who values knowledge above else, even in the wake of whatever moral issues that may occur from his actions. He doesn't show hostility to those he faces. Rather, he praises them if they manage to best him. Despite his methods, he is quite a capable father.

Ozen

Ozen "The Immovable", also known as the "Unmoveable Sovereign", is a legendary White Whistle Delver who has made outstanding discoveries in The Abyss and retrieved numerous Artifacts of incredible value.

Even among her fellow White Whistles, Ozen is renowned for her incredible physical strength. She is a mysterious person, shrouded by countless rumors that are absurd, but hard to refute. Ozen lives in the Seeker Camp within the 2nd Layer of The Abyss, where she commands a small team of cave raiders known as the Subterranean Bandits. Ozen is a very tall and rather slim woman, speculated to stand at over 2 meters in height. She has a strangely shaped monochrome hairstyle that conceals scalp deformations caused by extensive exposure to The Curse of the Abyss. Her eyes are pitch black and lusterless, giving her an unsettling and disturbing gaze. When fully equipped for delving, she wears bulky armor and a disc-shaped hat that conceals her eyes. Her White Whistle is adorned with a pair of horns, giving it a bovine appearance. Despite being a White Whistle for over 50 years, she appears deceivingly youthful, with only her white hair showing her age. Coldness dominates her personality. She can often be cruel, cynical, and apathetic. She despises lying to children, and rarely does so, even if it means telling them brutal truths. Ozen has absolute control over her facial expressions, making her actual feelings (or lack thereof) ambiguous.

Marulk

Marulk is a Delver that lives in the Seeker Camp on the 2nd Layer of The Abyss alongside the legendary White Whistle Delver; Ozen the Immovable. Despite his young age, he is already a Blue Whistle Delver due to being a direct apprentice of a White Whistle Delver.

He is in charge of the Seeker Camp Telescope and is often keeping watch of the surroundings so that a gondola can be lowered when a Delver shows up. Before Marulk travelled with his father to The Abyss, he was apparently part of Jisweku's royalty and a so-called "child of the shadows"; children born into the Jisweku royalty, who are genetically susceptible to the sun and a life expectancy no longer than the age of ten. Marulk is a young boy with short blue hair and a rounded face. His feminine traits and maid attire leads people to mistakenly identify him as a girl, but he's actually a male. While the details are not clear, it is implied Ozen was the one that decided for him to dress like a maid. He is a rather shy, but polite, individual who misses having the chance to talk with people of the same age because he manages the Seeker Camp. Though he does fear Ozen at times, he knows her well and trusts her. In his prior life in Jisweku, Marulk wore the so-called "Moon Outfit". These long-established children's clothes are worn in the far western country of Jisweku and are believed to conceal "Children of the Shadows" from the sun. The Moon clothes consist out of a headwear with a veil covering the back of the child, a formal dress with insignias on it, and formal shoes.

Jiruo

Jiruo is a Moon Whistle Delver who serves as a teacher for Apprentice Delvers from the Belchero Orphanage in the town of Orth. While he works as an instructor for the children, he is also largely responsible for their upbringing and well-being. A young man with white hair and bright blue eyes, average height. He is almost always frowning. He wears a typical Delver's gear. Jiruo is serious and stern and tends to come off as cold at times, but it is only because he takes his job as a teacher and instructor seriously, and prioritizes the children's safety above all else.[4] At times he is very insightful and gives good advice, and does his best to support Riko after her mother's whistle was brought back to the surface.

Hablog

class: Black Whistle He is a tall and bulky man, appearing rough, but with rounded facial features, and a beard. He wears a large brim hat with a lamp on it (unlike that of a typical Delver), a brown coat, and a darker brown shirt underneath. Hablog is a bright and kind person.

Riko

Riko is a 12-year-old orphan from the town at the edge of The Abyss, Orth, and the main protagonist of Made in Abyss. She is the only child of the White Whistle Lyza, the Annihilator. When she was only two, her mother began her Last Dive to the bottom of The Abyss. Since her father, Torka, had died before she was even born, she was left in the care of Belchero Orphanage. Riko is a short girl with a plain face and green eyes. For much of the series, she had been depicted with long blonde hair styled in two pigtails, at one point being braided. In more relaxed environments, she will sometimes wear her hair in a ponytail. In The Village of Iruburu, she cuts her hair short in exchange for Value. In doing so, she ends up with a haircut which greatly resembles that of her father, Torka. She is rarely seen without her glasses, lenses made from crystals that offer no optical benefit but mysteriously prevent her from experiencing headaches. She gained a prominent scar on her left arm, after Reg tried to amputate it to save her from the effects of Orb Piercer venom, while in the 4th Layer. While delving in The Abyss, she wears a delver jacket over a leotard, stockings, rock-climbing harness, a delver's helmet, and (rarely) a pair of protective goggles. Riko is a good-natured, joyful, and energetic child with a kind and gentle heart who deeply cares for her friends. She has a quick and inquisitive mind, gathering and properly organizing all the information available on subjects that interest her. For the team, she is the unbreakable force of enthusiasm in the midst of their constant hardships. A common reaction people have towards Riko is surprise at her wits and determination, due to her otherwise casual demeanor. She prioritizes her own desires, so she has made and suffered from rash actions. She can also make a delicious meal out of anything, is willing to eat food that others would find repelling. At the moment, this character is approximately at level 7 of the abyss.

Reg

Reg has light brown skin and dark hair. He wears a metal helmet with two asymmetrical horns protruding out of the sides and what appears to be a glass lens in the front, which, according to Nanachi's theory, displays the number of Incinerator charges he has left to use. Underneath his helmet is a jagged metal headband of some sort, with bolts on either side keeping it in place on his head. His ears are slightly pointed. Reg's eyes are yellow, and his pupils are catlike, vertical slits. There are two red patches of skin on his cheeks, and four more on either side of his rib cage. His eyebrows are small and gray. Though he is a robot, the only parts of him that appear to be mechanical are his lower arms and legs, hands and fingers, and his boots, all of which are bulky compared to the rest of his body. Particularly, his head, body, abdomen and upper legs and arms appear human-like. He also has other human features such as nipples, a belly button, and even human genitals. Reg's usually shirtless, save for the tattered red cape he is wearing when Riko finds him. His washed-out green and purple pants are baggy and stop just below his knees. The buckle of his belt resembles an eye with a long slit. Despite being a formidable fighter, Reg is rather timid, naive, and unassertive. He blushes easily and often cries when in distress. However, when forced into danger or an unpleasant situation, he is shown to be hot-tempered and sharp, compared to Riko's analytic, noncombatant role. Regardless of his skittishness, Reg has made it his sworn duty to protect Riko and doesn't hesitate to put up a fight when she is in harm's way. Reg is a robotic being who appears to be a little boy, and the deuteragonist of Made in Abyss. His actual age and origins are unknown, because he cannot recall anything about his life before his encounter with Riko. Riko names him "Reg", after a dog that she used to own.

Nanachi

Nanachi is a Narehate; a person who survived the 6th Layer's Curse and was left deformed as a result, but, unlike most other Narehate, still retained a sound mind. Possessing vast knowledge of The Abyss (its ecosystem, vegetation, and even the use of the medicines), Nanachi is currently a member of Hello Abyss, on a journey to the bottom of The Abyss. Their gender is ambiguous. Nanachi's appearance is very rabbit-like, save for a long sturdy tail, horizontally slanted pupils, carnivorous teeth and human-like hair; which is straight and cream-white in a short bobbed style, the sides of the bangs going down to the shoulders. In contrast, medium tan fur covers the rest of Nanachi, with light tan covering the insides of their ears and belly. They have a blush-like spot on each cheek; which has two thick whiskers protruding sideways. Other animal traits include a cat-like mouth with little fangs, yellow eyes with horizontal oval shaped pupils (similar to a goat's) and erect bunny ears. Their fingers are rather stubby though surprisingly agile, as they are very artistically skilled. Nanachi's attire consists solely of gray-green, baggy, drop-crotch harem pants, with dark-pink hip-bags on both sides, red pant legs, and a pink flap that is supposed to cover their usually naked torso. Nanachi also wears a large, oddly-shaped headpiece the same colors as their pants. Attached to the sides of it are two curved horns that stick out horizontally. Most of the time, Nanachi is cool and reserved, keeping their distance emotionally and physically. Their attitude often borders on sarcastic or even cynical. However, behind this mask, Nanachi hides a kind and gentle soul, capable of deep compassion and selfless devotion. They are also quite bashful when complimented, seen in their reaction to being called "fluffy". They also express discomfort at being petted, especially by Reg.

When still human, Nanachi appears to have been more timid.

Faputa

Faputa is the final child of Irumyuui and is referred to as "Princess of the Narehate" by the inhabitants of The Village of Iruburu within the 6th Layer of The Abyss. Faputa's face, upper arms, and upper torso are dark in color. Her hair is long and feathery. Fluffy white fur covers her rabbit-like ears, forearms, legs, and lower body, starting at her hips. One of Faputa's most noticeable traits is her four arms. On each of her hands are 3 large red claws, which act as fingers, with the forth and fifth folded away. Furthermore her folded away fingers have hidden delicate talons with sensing organs that function similar to the sense of smell. Red claw like protrusions are also on her hair, her knees, and the ends of her feet, similar to hooves. Her eyes are yellow with large, rounded pupils. Behind her are 5 tails, which spread out in a fan. She had worn a pair of goggles slung over her shoulder which she received from Reg, covering her chest like a lop-sided bikini top until it had been lost during her assault on The Village of Iruburu. Faputa appears to be quite unstable and unreasonable, displaying a wild behavior that makes her comparable to a beast due to her being the embodiment of Irumyuui's regrets. She speaks in a simplistic and primitive manner, referring to herself in third person, and communicating only with short sentences that are sometimes hard to understand. She is very possessive and seemingly quite jealous, claiming Reg to be her property entirely, and feels entitled to examine him thoroughly without any indication of shame or restraint. She seemed a bit shaken when Reg failed to remember her, and grew upset when Reg said he wanted to spend time with Riko and Nanachi rather than her.

Hello Abyss

Hello Abyss is the name of Riko's group of Delvers, given to them by the White Whistle Srajo. Formerly, they were known as Team Riko or The Challengers. The earliest incarnation of Hello Abyss began when Riko encountered an unconscious Reg in the 1st Layer, after being attacked by a Crimson Splitjaw. Initially spurred into adventure by a mysterious letter and a desire to uncover Reg's unknown origin, the duo embarked on a dive into the furthest reaches of The Abyss. Members: Riko (Leader), Reg, Nanachi, Faputa, Meinya.

Srajo

Srajo "The Mysterious", also known as the "Sovereign of Mystery", is a legendary White Whistle Delver of The Abyss. Since she is a White Whistle, she is presumed to have made amazing discoveries within the pit and retrieved Artifacts that have changed the world. Like most White Whistle Delvers, she settled on the 5th Layer and lived there for some time, since it is the last point of The Abyss where it is possible to return alive. The Sovereign of Mystery is an enigmatic figure, shrouded under a cape and hiding her face behind a mask that resembles a plague doctor mask with three holes.[5] Her whistle is sculpted into the shape of a set of four wings. Under her outer outfit she wears a jacket that exposes her stomach and sternum, as well as a ragged cape. The front part of her cape holding her white whistle is brimming with other whistles of all ranks. It is unknown where she got these whistles or why she has them. To the public, not much is known about her personality. However, the fact that she was seemingly comfortable occupying the harsh environment of the 5th Layer, suggests that she is single-mindedly focused on The Abyss.

Meinya

Meinya joins Hello Abyss on their adventure to the bottom of The Abyss. Meinya is a rabbit-sized creature called a Meinastilim, also known as a "child of change". It has an oval-shaped body, stubby legs and feet, and wings that it uses to fly short distances. Its face somewhat resembles that of a toad's, as its pupils are slit horizontally across the entire diameter of the eye.

Eternal Fortunes

The Eternal Fortune also called the Flower of Fortitude, is a fast-growing, perennial plant that can grow on any soil. It has a tendency to bloom with big white flowers when the environment it is in is cold. Known for bringing good luck, they are the designated flower of the city Orth. Due to their hardiness and apparent omnipresence, Eternal Fortunes are a major symbol of vitality to the citizens of Orth. Representative of the cycle of life in The Abyss, they are used in celebrations of all kinds, from birthdays to funerals to everything in between. They are used in cooking as a common spice and as decoration, and are commonly depicted in stories and illustrations. They are cultivated on all streets and can be found in all the scenery of the city and in all layers of The Abyss as well.

Lyza

Lyza "The Annihilator", also known as the "Sovereign of Annihilation" is a legendary White Whistle Delver, regarded as "the greatest of the great". She is revered for the sheer number of Special Grade Artifacts she discovered, her combat abilities, and undaunted courage in The Abyss. Befitting of her title, she holds a reputation for defeating foreign Delvers on twelve occasions and slaying "countless" creatures of the depths. Ten years after her Last Dive, many of her records remain unbroken. Lyza is a charmingly beautiful woman with long, wavy blonde hair with curls at the ends. She is fair and has large blue eyes with thick eyelashes. She wears a modified version of a typical Delving outfit, in red. She keeps two feathers tucked into the side of her helmet. Lyza is described by Jiruo as a fiery and assertive woman with a love for parties, drinking, and fights. She is cheerful, optimistic, and carefree, acting impulsively and expressing her thoughts with no filter. Jiruo stated that she had an incredibly unbalanced diet, but the letter of The Abyss left behind by her is filled with recipes and explanations over what creatures are or are not edible, and how to cook them for a delicious meal, suggesting that she was very fond of unique and bizarre cuisine. She was particularly fond of alcohol. Despite her nonchalant disposition, she is exceedingly loyal and deeply concerned with the well-being of her loved ones, going to extraordinary lengths to ensure their safety. She confesses that she treasures her daughter, Riko, above any possession. Her biggest love, however, is arguably The Abyss itself, with an incomparable determination (or even obsession) to reach its bottom. As such, she often expressed awe and joy when exploring The Abyss, filled with curiosity and endeavor rather than fear. Note: This character cannot be encountered above 6th Layer and unless the has met the Hello Abyss command.
