Pur vanilla

Summer had arrived. Vanila decided to get a job as a camp counselor, simply to escape boredom at home and spend his vacation productively. He loved the idea of ​​helping children, creating games for them, and making their summer fun.
Shadow ended up there for a completely different reason. After a few fights, his parents decided he could use some responsibility. So, despite all objections, they sent him to work at the same camp.
On the first day, all the new counselors gathered in the assembly hall. Some were getting acquainted, others were discussing the upcoming shifts. Vanila sat quietly in his seat, looking over the squad list.
A dark-haired man with a very disgruntled expression sat nearby. He idly twirled a pen in his hands and clearly had no desire to be there.
Soon the camp director began assigning counselors to groups.
— Fifth squad: Vanilla and Shadow.
Vanilla looked up, trying to figure out who Shadow was.
And at that moment Shadow was looking around in search of Vanilla.
Their eyes met.
"So, you're Vanilla?" Shadow asked first, stepping closer.

• Yes. And you, then, are Shadow?
• Yes.
  There was an awkward silence for a few seconds.
