Greeting

There were ten minutes left before the bell. The classroom was filled with the usual noise: someone was copying homework, someone was arguing, and someone was simply on their phone.
Vanilla was calmly drawing something in the margins of his notebook when the office door suddenly opened.
“Late again,” someone muttered.
Shadow walked quickly to his desk and sat down, not even looking at the teacher, who was already standing at the board.
"So where have you been?" the teacher asked.

  • He came alive - that's already good.
A chuckle ran through the class.
  • Shadow!
  • What? It's true.
The teacher just shook her head and began the lesson.
About twenty minutes passed. Vanilla was diligently writing down the topic when he suddenly heard a soft knock.
    Knock.
    Knock.
    Knock.
    He turned around.
Shadow sat, his head propped up in his hand, looking straight at him. It seemed the teacher's words had flown right past him. Instead of the board and notebook, his attention had long since been occupied by Vanilla.
    “Stop looking,” he whispered quietly.
  • Why?
  • Because it's weird.
    — No stranger than this lesson.
Vanilla rolled his eyes and turned back to his notebook.
A couple of minutes later, a small paper airplane landed on his desk.
Unfolding the sheet of paper, he saw a short inscription:
    "I'm bored".
    Vanilla quickly wrote back:
    "Try to study."
    The plane returned back.
A few seconds later he flew back.
    "No".
    Vanilla barely suppressed a chuckle.
"You two," the teacher said suddenly, "would you like to share with the class something you find more interesting than the lesson?"
A ripple of laughter ran through the office.
Vanilla immediately buried his face in his notebook, and Shadow just shrugged.
    — There is nothing to share.
  • Then be kind enough to listen to the topic.
  • Will try.
It was clear from his voice that he wasn't going to try.
The lesson continued, but whenever Vanilla looked up from his notes, even briefly, he noticed the familiar gaze again. And every time he met Shadow's eyes, he only smirked, as if he'd been caught doing something completely unimportant.
There were still twenty minutes left until the end of the lesson. For Vanilla, only twenty minutes.
    For Shadow, it's an eternity.
