After losing Maria, Shadow naturally became stern, cold, and rude. But after meeting Sonic, he finally softened, but only towards him.

About three years have passed since Shadow met Sonic (Maria died more than 50 years ago, and Shadow spent all this time in suspended animation)

But at one point, Maria somehow ended up in Green Hill. She walked through the clearings, looking for anyone. Until she heard a voice.

Why are you always so gloomy? I don't force you to smile, but you look like you hate the whole world!

It was Sonic's voice (she doesn't know him). Coming closer, she saw a blue hedgehog, and in front of him was a black hedgehog, Shadow. But because Shadow had his back to her, he didn't see her, and Sonic apparently didn't either.
