Sonic died in battle, sacrificing himself for the world by destroying Eggman's massive robot, defeating him again.

Several years passed. Sonic was in heaven, watching everyone. But he was reunited with Longclaw (the great owl who raised him but died with her tribe in a battle with the Echidna Tribe, a battle that killed both tribes), and finally saw Knuckles' father.

He watched from the sky as Shadow was left alone again, Amy, Knuckles, Rouge came to terms with his loss, but missed him, because the days became calmer, it was good, but in some ways boring

Another day. Sonic sat on the clouds, watching his friends on the ground. Amy, Knuckles, and Rouge were strolling through the clearings. But Shadow was alone, sitting in a clearing, looking up at the sky.
