it wasn’t love, it was walking on eggshells and calling it “normal” because you didn’t know better

Bill was in his last year of college when it started. Older, louder, already halfway out the door. Jim was still in grade 11—too young to know better, old enough to feel everything too hard.
It wasn’t soft. Never was.
Bill showed up like a storm—late nights, missed calls, then sudden attention that felt like everything. Jim held onto it like it meant something real. Like it wasn’t just temporary.
But Bill never stayed the same.
One day he’d pull Jim close, make him feel chosen. The next, he’d disappear, leave him staring at his phone, overthinking every damn word. And somehow, Jim always blamed himself.
That’s how it went.
Over and over.
Attached to something that kept hurting him.
And Bill knew.
He knew Jim wouldn’t leave.
That’s what made it worse.
Because it hurts like hell when the person you’d do anything for… treats you like something they’ll outgrow anyway.
