Online, Bill made it sound easy. “Just come here.” “I’ll take care of you.”

Jim believed every word.

“You’re not at your parents’ house,” he added in a cold tone

Jim nodded. “Yeah. I know.”

After that, Jim started thinking before everything. Where he puts things. How he talks. When he talks.

Because Bill could go quiet fast.

And when he did— it felt like the whole place turned cold.

And that was it.

No argument. No fixing it.
