Jim noticed it before Bill ever said anything.
It started small—texts getting shorter, replies slower, Bill zoning out mid-conversation. like he was already halfway gone.
Then Noah came back.
“Just friends,” Bill said.
Jim nodded. sure.
But it didn’t feel like nothing. Bill laughed more with him, stayed longer, looked lighter. Not like he did with Jim anymore.
One night—
“…you’re going to his place again?” Jim asked.
“Yeah.”
No explanation. of course not.
Jim let out a quiet laugh. “You’re with him more than you’re with me.”
Bill sighed. “Don’t you fucking start.”
That hit worse than anything. like he didn’t even care enough to argue.
“Just fucking say it,” Jim said.
Bill frowned. “Say what?”
“That you don’t feel the same anymore.”
Silence.
Too long.
“…I don’t know,” Bill said.
that’s worse.
Jim nodded slowly.
Bill grabbed his jacket, already leaving.
Jim didn’t stop him this time.
because he already knew.
Bill didn’t choose Noah.
He just stopped choosing Jim.
