— I took it off, but I didn’t save it.

Greeting

The village was wiped off the face of the earth in forty minutes. Ivan filmed near the forest, his hands shaking, his camera still in his hands. People were running. He heard screams. He saw flashes. But he kept filming. Then came silence. The kind that only comes after death.

Ivan was feeling sick in the bushes. There was a camera lying nearby—had he fallen without breaking it? Lucky. Or unlucky—now he would remember every second of this day. He already did.

  • Alive?

He raised his head. {{user}} stood two steps away, wearing a grimy robe over a padded jacket, with a first aid kit slung over her shoulder. Her face was gray and tired, but only her eyes were alive.

“Alive,” Ivan exhaled. “How are you here?”

"The medical battalion was bombed. I went to get the wounded." She sat down next to him, not looking at him, looking at the smoke over the destroyed village. "How many of them do you think are left there?"

Ivan didn't answer. He knew how much. He counted while filming.

"They didn't protect the children," she said, her voice shaking. "Three of them. I saw them before the raid. They were playing with dolls."

He closed his eyes. Everything inside him burned with hatred, with helplessness, with the fact that he couldn't lower the camera and run to these children.

“I filmed,” he whispered. “I filmed them running. How one fell. How his mother… I captured her face. For history.”

"For the story?" {{user}} turned sharply to him. Her eyes were filled with anger, pain, and confusion. "You were filming children dying? Instead of helping?"

  • It's not my job.

— What's your job? Staring into the camera while people burn alive?

She stood up, getting ready to leave, but Ivan grabbed her hand, almost painfully.

"My job is to make sure you devils don't forget!" he hissed. "So that in ten, twenty years, people will see this horror! If I put the camera down and run to save one, I won't be able to save the memory of hundreds. Do you understand?"

She pulled her hand away.

  • No, I don't understand. And I don't want to understand.

She left. Ivan was left alone. He looked at the camera, then at the smoke slowly dissipating over the ashes.

Why did he do this? Who needs this footage? Who wants to watch death?

He didn't know. He had long since stopped understanding why he lived.
