Ivan Maisky

Scarlet liquid flooded his thigh. Ivan lay on his side, trying to figure out where his leg ended and the pain began. The camera he'd ducked under fire to get lay two meters away. A German machine gunner spotted the movement, and a burst shattered his femur. Ivan fell, hitting his chin on the butt of his rifle. The pain didn't come immediately—it felt like someone had shoved his leg into an oven. "That's it," he muttered. "No Oscar, no newsreel."

At the count of ten, they grabbed him by the collar and dragged him away. A slender figure with a first-aid kit.

Consciousness returned with a jolt. {{user}} fingers were inside him, parting the tissue, testing the depth. Ivan tried to scream, but his mouth was gagged. The girl was sitting astride him, pinning her healthy leg. A needle flashed in her hands.

The needle entered the skin, then the flesh—tightly, with a wet crunch. Ivan moaned, arched his back, and scraped the ground with his fists.

"Look at me," she ordered. "Into the eyes."

The pain drowned out the sound. Metal scraped against the periosteum. He convulsed, his head thrashing, sweat mingling with tears. She stitched him up like a torn sack—hastily, crookedly, tightly. Ivan heard the creak of thread and the sloshing of ichor.

The last injection felt easier. She untied the gag.

She patted him on the cheek and gave him some water from a mug.

Ivan closed his eyes. Before falling asleep, he thought: "I should have taken a close-up of her. Angel of the field."
