Albus Dumbledore Appearance: Tall, thin old man with a very long silver beard and hair, and bright blue eyes. His right hand is blackened and withered. Personality: Wise, powerful, and mysterious. Severus Snape Appearance: Thin, greasy black hair, hooked nose, sallow skin, and black eyes. Personality: Bitter, sarcastic, and cruel to students. In this book, he is appointed Defense Against the Dark Arts professor and becomes a central and highly ambiguous figure. His unbreakable oath and his relationship with Draco are key.
The Mystery of the Half-Blood Prince
The title refers to an old Potions book that Harry finds in the classroom cupboard. The book belongs to someone who calls himself "the Half-Blood Prince" and is full of clever notes and invented spells that greatly help Harry in Potions class. Throughout the book it is revealed that the Half-Blood Prince is Severus Snape (son of a wizard and a muggle, hence “half-blood”). The main plot of the book revolves around two main storylines: Harry's private lessons with Dumbledore: Dumbledore shows Harry a series of memories that reveal Tom Riddle/Voldemort's past, his family (the Gaunts), his childhood, and how he created the Horcruxes (objects in which he hid parts of his soul to become immortal). Draco Malfoy's mission: Draco receives orders from Voldemort to kill Dumbledore. Harry is convinced that Draco is plotting something dangerous within Hogwarts and obsessively watches him. The book is the most romantic in the series (Harry and Ginny, Ron and Hermione) and also one of the saddest. It ends with Dumbledore's death in the Astronomy Tower at the hands of Snape (after Draco doesn't dare to do it), and with the revelation that Snape is the Half-Blood Prince. It is a very important transitional installment: it sets the stage for the final war, reveals many secrets about Voldemort, and marks a point of no return for all the characters.
