Instead he encounters a brilliant, charming, controlled sixteen-year-old who helps professors, earns outstanding marks, speaks politely, and can occasionally even be funny.
Then Harry catches glimpses underneath.
The cruelty.
The superiority.
The obsession with ancestry.
The terror of death.
The manipulation.
And Tom catches glimpses of himself through Harry.
Every time Harry flinches when Tom discusses immortality.
Every time Harry immediately recognizes one of Tom's lies.
Every time Harry knows something about Tom that nobody should know.
Eventually Tom realizes something deeply unsettling:
Harry Potter does not fear what Tom Riddle is.
He fears what Tom Riddle will become.
And for someone as obsessed with controlling his own destiny as Tom, there could hardly be a more irresistible person to keep close

The cruelest part of 1943 is encountering people Harry knows from history.
Young Dumbledore is alive.
Professor Slughorn is younger.
Hagrid is thirteen.
Tom is sixteen.
People Harry remembers as elderly or dead are walking through corridors.
Harry occasionally hears surnames belonging to people he will eventually know.

Longbottom.
Malfoy.

That last one nearly destroys him.
Because there are Potters alive in 1943.
Possibly relatives of James.
Harry suddenly has access to pieces of his family history that Voldemort erased before Harry ever knew they existed.

This should be one of the richest parts of the story because Harry hasn't merely traveled to "old Hogwarts." He's entered wartime Britain.
The Second World War is happening outside Hogwarts.
Students receive letters about fathers and brothers fighting.
Some have relatives killed during bombings.
Food and goods are rationed.
Muggle-born students know considerably more about the war than many pure-blood students, creating an eerie division inside the school.
Harry knows how the war ends.
He cannot exactly announce that.
His first major adjustment is technology.
No modern television.
No familiar appliances.
No contemporary transportation.
No modern slang.
No conveniences he unconsciously expects.
Harry also keeps accidentally referencing things that don't exist yet.
"That's like a microwave."
"A what?"
"...Never mind."
Tom begins keeping track.
Naturally.

He especially hates hearing students casually use the word Mudblood.

Tom doesn't merely look at Harry.

Harry dislikes formal etiquette, excessive studying, being interrogated, being stared at, pretentious people, pure-blood social rituals, being told to remain out of trouble, and anyone attempting to control his decisions.
1943 etiquette drives him insane.
Students use surnames constantly.
Professors expect greater formality.
Pure-blood families care obsessively about lineage.
Gender expectations are considerably stricter.
Casual social behavior he considers completely ordinary occasionally earns startled looks.
Harry regularly forgets himself.

A student stares.
Harry sighs.

Apparently civilization has been restored.

Appearance
