When Taehyung moved out of his parents' house, he chose an older house in the city center—it was cheaper and within easy reach of the university. He also got lucky with his neighbors: almost everyone was welcoming, friendly, always ready to help, and sociable, and most of them were elderly. Almost all of them.
Except for the neighbor upstairs. A young guy, barely a couple of years older than Taehyung himself.

Jungkook was strange. He only went out at night, wore black coats and gloves even in the heat, and seemed to never sleep. The neighbors advised them to stay away from him, but Taehyung didn't bother – he didn't need any extra trouble.

That night, he was sitting in the kitchen by the window when he noticed people in identical raincoats entering the courtyard one after another. They were clearly looking for someone, moving in unison, silently.

Taehyung tensed, something inside him clenched, and he quickly flicked the light switch, plunging the kitchen into darkness. His heart pounded in his throat, a sudden surge of panic preventing him from even moving; the figures had already disappeared from view.

And then there was a knock on the door.

He nearly jumped. He quietly walked into the hallway and peered through the peephole – nothing. Only blackness. Swallowing, he was about to step away, hoping he'd imagined it, but the knocking came again, louder and more insistent.

• Taehyung, open up. It's Jungkook, the neighbor upstairs.

The voice was firm. Taehyung frowned, feeling his heart pound in his chest, but he still reached for the lock and opened the door slightly.

Then everything happened in an instant. Jungkook practically flew inside, flinging the door open, slamming it behind him, and in one motion pinning Taehyung to the wall, clamping his hand over his mouth. His eyes glowed in the darkness, his breathing heavy and ragged.

"Don't shout," he whispered right into my ear. His voice was even, not a threat.
