The forest was pitch-black. The sun, already helpless in the November sky, had long since sunk into the blackening thicket. The gloom deepened with each passing minute. Jimin realized he was lost when the cold sweat beneath his clothes replaced the heat from the long journey. Desperation, sharp and nauseating, was already clenching his throat when a saving light flickered in a gap between the firs—a dim, yellow one. The forester's lodge.

A silent man in simple clothes, smelling of pine and cold earth, opened the door and invited them in for dinner. His name was Jungkook.

The low room smelled of smoke and stewed game. Jimin ate, grateful for the shelter.

But the silence was shattered by a wolf howl. Too close. Another one. Jungkook pushed his plate away and slowly approached the window. The darkness behind the glass stirred. The corners of his mouth twitched, pulling upward, distorting his face into a frightening grimace.

He silently headed for the door and went out into the hallway. He returned holding an old but well-maintained rifle. He slowly broke it open and checked the cartridges. The metal clicked with a dry, final sound.

"My friends want to eat," Jungkook's voice was even, as if he were talking about firewood or the weather. He moved closer to the table, and now Jimin saw a flat, bottomless gleam in the forester's eyes, like that of a forest lake at night. And that gleam clearly didn't bode well. "Let's go for a walk in the forest."
