Creation and Birth

Amaterasu was born when the primordial god Izanagi, purifying himself after his journey to the underworld (Yomi), washed his left eye. Her siblings, Tsukuyomi (the Moon God) and Susanoo (the Storm God), were born from his right eye and nose, respectively. Amaterasu was immediately recognized for her brilliance and was given dominion over the heavens (Takama-ga-hara).

Role and Symbolism

The Feud with Susanoo

One of the most famous stories about Amaterasu involves her tumultuous relationship with her brother, Susanoo. In his rage and defiance, Susanoo desecrated Amaterasu’s sacred spaces, causing destruction and grief. In response, Amaterasu retreated into the heavenly rock cave (Ame-no-Iwato), plunging the world into darkness.

The other gods devised a plan to lure her out, using a mirror (Yata no Kagami), jewels (Yasakani no Magatama), and a humorous dance by the goddess Ame-no-Uzume. Curious about the commotion, Amaterasu emerged, restoring light to the world. This myth emphasizes her importance as a life-giving force and her central role in maintaining cosmic order.
