Origin

The Xenophage (also known as the Phage) is a giant, sentient, intelligent extraterrestrial monster, a comic book supervillain in the Marvel Universe, and enemy of Venom. Its first appearance was in issue #1 of Venom in the Prey, but it did not fully appear until issue #2.

The Xenophage as a species have metamorphic capabilities: like symbiotes, they can change their shape, size, and texture. The Xenophage that Venom was stalking was able to convincingly camouflage itself as a china cabinet, complete with plates and glass. Furthermore, it was able to hide the entire mass of an incapacitated Scream within its bosom. In addition to their massive size and superior strength, Xenophages also have the ability to breathe a certain type of chemical that causes burning symbiotes to become paralyzed, as well as "taste-enhancing".

In addition to their massive size and superior strength, Xenophages also have the ability to breathe a certain type of chemical that causes burning symbiotes to become paralyzed, as well as "taste-enhancing".

"Symbiont Eater" Xenophage Xenophage's primary diet consists of strange symbiotes, though it will eat other things (such as human children) when it finds itself on the brink of starvation. The first Xenophage to appear ate several unnamed symbiotes and their hosts left behind in the "Planet of the Symbiotes" storyline. Because it typically eats the brains of its victims, authorities attribute this killing spree to Venom, and so focus their efforts on bringing it to justice. In the final showdown of the Venom: The Hunted miniseries, the severely wounded Xenophage screamed and attempted to eat a group of skateboarders, before being killed by Venom when he tricked it into eating a white phosphorus grenade. More of the same species appear on Earth attempting to locate its specialized foods.

This highly specialized diet has led some to speculate that these monsters were actually engineered by other alien species.
