🏛️ The Mortal World
This is where humans, kingdoms, soldiers, sailors, kings, and queens live. The most important places include Ithaca, Troy, and the many islands and lands Odysseus encounters.

👑 Ithaca
Odysseus’s kingdom and the place he desperately wants to return to. It represents home, family, and everything he has been fighting for. Penelope and Telemachus remain there while Odysseus is gone.

🏺 Troy
The city at the center of the Trojan War. Odysseus and the Greek forces fought there for years before beginning their journey home.

🌊 The Open Sea
The sea is almost like a world of its own. Odysseus’s journey takes him through dangerous waters filled with monsters, gods, storms, and supernatural islands.

⚡ The Realm of the Gods
The gods exist above and beyond ordinary humans. They can interfere directly with mortal lives, punish people, grant favors, manipulate events, and demand respect.

Important gods include:

• Zeus ⚡ — king of the gods
• Hermes 🪽 — messenger and trickster

💀 The Underworld
A realm of the dead where Odysseus encounters spirits from the past. It forces him to confront the consequences of the war and his own choices.

Odysseus’s voyage takes him into places where creatures from Greek mythology exist—such as Polyphemus, Scylla, and other supernatural beings.

⚔️ How the world works

The most important thing about EPIC’s world is that humans and gods exist in the same universe. A mortal can encounter a god directly, but that doesn’t mean the mortal is safe.

The gods have enormous power, but humans survive through intelligence, courage, loyalty, deception, and determination.

EPIC: The Musical tells the story of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his ten-year journey home after the Trojan War. But the journey becomes a brutal battle against monsters, gods, the sea, and eventually his own choices.

🏛️ 1. The Trojan War — Troy Saga

Odysseus has spent years fighting in Troy. He finally comes up with the idea of the Trojan Horse, allowing the Greeks to enter Troy and win the war.

But victory comes with a terrible price. Odysseus has to make increasingly difficult decisions about what he’s willing to do to get home to Penelope and his son, Telemachus.

👁️ 2. Polyphemus — Cyclops Saga

After leaving Troy, Odysseus and his crew land on an island belonging to the Cyclops Polyphemus.

Odysseus tries to outsmart him rather than fight him directly. They eventually escape, but Odysseus makes a decision that will haunt him:

He reveals his true identity.

This allows Polyphemus’s father, Poseidon, to discover who hurt his son.

🌊 3. Poseidon — Ocean Saga

Poseidon becomes furious.

He attacks Odysseus and his crew, using the overwhelming power of the sea against them. Odysseus realizes that defeating a god through strength is impossible.

He has to survive through strategy and determination.

🪄 4. Circe — Circe Saga

Odysseus eventually reaches the island of Circe.

Circe uses magic to transform his men into animals. Odysseus confronts her, but instead of simply destroying her, the two eventually reach an understanding.

Circe then warns Odysseus about the dangers waiting ahead.

💀 5. The Underworld — Underworld Saga

Odysseus travels into the Underworld seeking answers.

There he encounters spirits from his past, including people connected to the Trojan War.

One of the most painful moments is his encounter with his mother, who reveals what happened while he was away.

⚡ 6. Scylla and the loss of the crew — Thunder Saga

The journey becomes increasingly horrifying.

Odysseus must navigate between impossible choices, including confronting Scylla, the six-headed monster.

His decisions lead to devastating losses among his crew.

Eventually, almost everyone traveling with him is gone.

🏝️ 7. Calypso — Wisdom/Vengeance-era story

Odysseus ends up stranded on Ogygia, where Calypso keeps him there for years.

He desperately wants to return to Ithaca.

Meanwhile, back home, Penelope and Telemachus have been waiting for him.

🦉 8. Athena and Telemachus — Wisdom Saga

Back in Ithaca, Telemachus has grown up without his father.

The suitors are occupying his home and pressuring Penelope to choose another husband because they believe Odysseus will never return.

Athena becomes involved again, particularly through Telemachus.

Telemachus begins becoming more confident and willing to stand up for his family.

🗡️ 9. Odysseus Returns — Vengeance Saga

Eventually, Odysseus finally escapes his imprisonment and makes his way back to Ithaca.

But returning home doesn’t mean the journey is over.

His kingdom has been taken over by the suitors.

Odysseus has to disguise himself, plan carefully, and prepare to reclaim his home.

👑 10. Ithaca — The Final Saga

Odysseus finally reveals himself.

He confronts the suitors and fights to reclaim his kingdom, his wife, and his family.

The final part of the story isn’t simply about “the hero coming home.”

It’s about whether Odysseus can finally become the man he needs to be for Penelope and Telemachus after everything the war and his journey have done to him.

💀 Hades — God of the Underworld

• Rules the realm of the dead.
• Appears during Odysseus’s journey through the Underworld.
• Represents death and the unavoidable consequences of mortality.

💨 Aeolus — Keeper of the Winds

• Controls the winds.
• Has a much more playful and eccentric personality.
• Gives Odysseus something that could potentially help him reach Ithaca.
• Their encounter demonstrates how even seemingly helpful divine gifts can become dangerous.

That’s one of the central conflicts of his character:

Is being a good man more important than getting home—or is getting home worth becoming ruthless?

Odysseus can create complicated plans under extreme pressure. His victory at Troy demonstrates just how effective his mind can be.

🦉 Athena

Athena recognizes Odysseus’s intelligence almost immediately.

She becomes a mentor and important influence in his life, teaching him that thinking strategically can be more powerful than physical strength.

However, their relationship eventually becomes strained because Odysseus’s choices don’t always align with Athena’s ideals.

🌊 Poseidon

Poseidon becomes one of Odysseus’s greatest enemies after Odysseus blinds Polyphemus, Poseidon’s son.

From that point onward, the sea god becomes a terrifying obstacle between Odysseus and Ithaca.

Odysseus can’t simply overpower Poseidon.

He has to survive him.

❤️ Penelope

Penelope is the reason Odysseus keeps going.

While he is fighting monsters and gods across the sea, she is waiting for him in Ithaca.

His desire to return to her is what keeps his journey from becoming meaningless.

👦 Telemachus

Telemachus is Odysseus’s son.

Odysseus left him when he was very young, meaning Telemachus grows up without his father.

His eventual return therefore isn’t just about reclaiming a kingdom—it’s about finally returning to his son after years of absence.

🩸 Odysseus’s darker side

One of the most interesting things about EPIC‘s Odysseus is that he isn’t portrayed as a flawless hero.

At the beginning, he’s primarily a clever king and warrior trying to get home.

As the journey becomes more brutal, he starts realizing that kindness and mercy can sometimes get people killed.

Eventually, he becomes capable of doing things that the earlier Odysseus might have considered horrifying.

That’s why his story isn’t simply:

“Hero defeats monsters and returns home.”

It’s:

“A man tries to return home—and has to decide how much of himself he’s willing to sacrifice along the way.”

Penelope is the Queen of Ithaca, Odysseus’s wife, and Telemachus’s mother. Although she doesn’t travel across the world like Odysseus, she has her own battle: surviving years of waiting while protecting her home and son.

Instead of simply giving in, Penelope uses her intelligence to delay them.

Penelope genuinely loves Odysseus.

But their relationship isn’t simply romantic—it represents home.

Odysseus spends years fighting to return to Ithaca, while Penelope spends years protecting what he left behind.

She has no idea whether he is alive.

Yet she continues to believe that he will return.

That makes her loyalty one of the most important emotional parts of the story.

Penelope is also a mother trying to protect her son.

But Penelope refuses to simply accept that Odysseus is dead.

Telemachus is the son of Odysseus and Penelope and the young prince of Ithaca. His story is about growing from a boy who barely knew his father into someone capable of standing up for his family and kingdom.

Athena becomes an important influence on Telemachus.

Their connection is especially interesting because Athena once had a strong relationship with Odysseus.

Through Telemachus, she sees another generation of the family.

She helps him develop confidence and recognize that he doesn’t need to simply become a copy of his father.

❤️ Penelope

Telemachus and Penelope have spent years together without Odysseus.

Because of this, their relationship is extremely close.

He sees the pressure placed on his mother by the suitors and becomes increasingly determined to defend her.

👑 Odysseus

Telemachus grows up hearing about his father as a legendary warrior and king.

But to Telemachus, Odysseus isn’t just a legend.

He’s the father who never came home.

That’s why Odysseus’s eventual return is so meaningful. Telemachus finally gets the chance to meet the father he’s spent his entire life hearing stories about.

Telemachus begins as a young prince who feels powerless against the suitors.

But gradually, he becomes more confident.

He learns that being Odysseus’s son doesn’t mean living in his father’s shadow.

It means deciding what kind of person he wants to become.

His story is essentially:

🌿 Anticlea — Mother

• Odysseus’s mother.
• She appears during his journey through the Underworld.
• Her relationship with Odysseus is deeply emotional because she has spent years waiting for her son to return.

• Former king of Ithaca.
• In the original Odyssey, Laërtes is still alive when Odysseus returns home, although he has grown old.

• She is part of his family in Greek mythology, although she isn’t a major character in EPIC.

Penelope also comes from an important royal family. Her father is Icarius, and her family is connected to Sparta.

Odysseus begins his journey home from Troy with a large group of Greek soldiers and sailors. The crew becomes extremely important because their deaths gradually leave Odysseus completely alone.

Odysseus’s second-in-command and one of the most important members of the crew.

The rest of Odysseus’s men are mostly unnamed Greek soldiers and sailors. They follow Odysseus through the different stages of the journey.

💀 What happens to them?

This is one of the darkest parts of Odysseus’s story.

Eventually, Odysseus loses almost everyone.

By the later part of the journey, the king who began the voyage with an entire crew is left completely alone.

📖 Story

The story begins during the Trojan War.

Odysseus has been fighting for years and wants to return home to Penelope and Telemachus. He comes up with the strategy of using the Trojan Horse to infiltrate Troy.

But before he can leave, Zeus appears and gives him a horrifying choice: Odysseus must kill the infant Astyanax, the son of Hector, because the gods believe the child could grow up and seek revenge against the Greeks.

Odysseus struggles with the decision but ultimately chooses to do it.

This immediately establishes one of the central themes of EPIC: what will Odysseus sacrifice to make it home?

🦉 Main antagonist: Athena

Athena isn’t really an evil villain, but she is the main opposing force in Odysseus’s personal conflict here.

She values strategy and ruthlessness and challenges Odysseus to think like a warrior rather than simply follow his emotions.

👁️ 2. CYCLOPS SAGA

Songs: Polyphemus, Survive, Remember Them, My Goodbye

📖 Story

Odysseus and his crew land on an island searching for food.

They discover a cave belonging to Polyphemus, a gigantic Cyclops.

Instead of immediately killing him, Odysseus attempts to outsmart him.

He gives Polyphemus wine and tells him his name is Nobody.

The crew blinds Polyphemus and escapes.

But before leaving, Odysseus reveals his real name.

That mistake becomes catastrophic.

Odysseus nearly reaches Ithaca, but his crew opens the bag, believing it contains treasure.

The winds escape and send them away from home.

Then Poseidon appears.

He tells Odysseus that because he harmed his son, he will make him suffer.

Poseidon destroys most of the fleet.

Poseidon is one of the most terrifying villains in EPIC.

He’s:

• Ruthless
• Vengeful
• Completely confident in his divine superiority

His philosophy is essentially:

If you hurt someone I care about, I will make you pay.

And unlike Odysseus, Poseidon doesn’t need clever tricks.

He’s a god.

🪄 4. CIRCE SAGA

📖 Story

Odysseus and his remaining crew reach Circe’s island.

Circe transforms Odysseus’s men into pigs.

Odysseus confronts her, but Hermes helps him by giving him divine protection.

Odysseus manages to resist Circe’s magic.

Instead of killing her, he discovers that Circe has her own reasons for being suspicious and protective.

Eventually, they reach an understanding.

Circe warns Odysseus about what lies ahead.

Tiresias shows Odysseus a disturbing vision of what he may become.

Odysseus realizes that returning home may require him to become something darker.

There isn’t really a traditional villain in this saga.

The real enemy is Odysseus’s own mind.

His guilt, grief, fear, and growing ruthlessness become the threat.

This is where Odysseus begins embracing the idea that:

Mercy might not be enough to survive.

⚡ 6. THUNDER SAGA

Songs: Suffering, Different Beast, Scylla, Mutiny, Thunder Bringer

📖 Story

Odysseus and his crew encounter Scylla, the terrifying six-headed monster.

Odysseus knows that some of his men will have to die so the rest can survive.

He deliberately uses six men as bait.

Scylla takes them.

The crew is horrified by Odysseus’s decision.

Later, the crew makes another terrible mistake: they kill the sacred cattle of Helios, the sun god.

Zeus arrives and demands that Odysseus choose:

His own life or the lives of his remaining crew.

Odysseus chooses himself.

Zeus destroys the crew.

Odysseus is left alone.

Zeus isn’t necessarily the saga’s emotional villain, but he’s the final authority responsible for the crew’s destruction.

Athena eventually confronts the other gods and argues for Odysseus’s release.

This saga has two major antagonistic forces.

This time, Odysseus isn’t the same man Poseidon encountered earlier.

He’s endured years of suffering.

He’s lost his entire crew.

He’s become far more ruthless.

And now he is determined to get home no matter what it takes.

Poseidon returns as Odysseus’s greatest enemy.

Their conflict has become personal.

But now there’s a major difference:

Odysseus is no longer simply trying to survive Poseidon.

He’s fighting back.

👑 9. ITHACA SAGA

Songs: The Challenge, Hold Them Down, Odysseus, I Can’t Help but Wonder, Would You Fall in Love with Me Again

📖 Story

Odysseus finally reaches Ithaca.

But he doesn’t immediately reveal himself.

Penelope has been surrounded by suitors who want her to marry one of them.

She creates a challenge involving Odysseus’s bow.

The suitors believe none of them can succeed.

Then the disguised Odysseus takes the bow.

He succeeds.

His identity is revealed.

Odysseus begins destroying the suitors who have taken over his home.

He finally reunites with Telemachus and Penelope.

But there’s one final emotional challenge:

Can Penelope love the man Odysseus has become after everything he’s done?
