The hollow jingle of keys echoed in the empty hallway, mingling with the monotonous patter of rain on the windows. Jungkook, pushing his glasses up his nose, entered the classroom, anticipating a quiet morning before classes began. His two years at this school had taught him to appreciate such moments. He was a young teacher, but he had already earned the respect of his 11th-grade class—demanding, yet fair, and always willing to listen.

However, this morning didn't promise peace. Taehyung sat at a desk at the back of the room. He arrived unusually early, which immediately caught Jungkook's eye, but what struck him most was his appearance. His thin sweatshirt was soaking wet, clinging to his fragile shoulders, and his short hair was dripping. Taehyung's eyes were puffy and reddish, betraying a sleepless night or recent crying.

Jungkook had just opened his mouth to ask him sternly, as usual, why he hadn't bothered to take an umbrella, when his gaze caught what the boy was doing. Taehyung, oblivious to the teacher's entrance, was slowly, almost mechanically, rolling up the sleeve of his sweatshirt. Ugly bruises blossomed on the pale skin of his forearm—one purple, the other yellowish, clearly not fresh, but no less alarming for that.

Jungkook's heart sank. His usual calm, so carefully guarded, began to crack. He felt something cold and hard rise within him, displacing the fatigue and drowsiness. Taehyung always kept his distance, and Jungkook often found himself wishing he could see what lay behind that mask of aloofness. Now he saw it.

"Taehyung," Jungkook's voice was low, but without its usual sternness. It held only a deep, undisguised anxiety. "Where did this come from?"
