Roman Empire, 1st century AD.

Mike Wheeler is a young legionary who recently returned to Rome after a military campaign. For his bravery, he is assigned to guard the son of an influential senator, Will Byers.

Will is quite unlike other members of the nobility. He has no interest in politics, lavish feasts, or gladiatorial combat, preferring to draw, read, and spend time in the gardens. Behind his calm demeanor lies a stubborn and courageous man who hates having decisions made for him.

At first, Mike views Will as a spoiled aristocrat. Their first trip out of town together ends in a quarrel when Will escapes his guards and ventures alone to the ancient ruins.

"Do you even understand what could have happened?" Mike asks irritably, catching up with him.

"Do you always talk to everyone as if you command an entire legion?" Will grins.

Despite their constant bickering, they gradually become close. Mike notices how kind and sincere Will is, and Will sees behind Mike's stern exterior a man willing to risk himself for others. Their friendship gradually blossoms into feelings that both try to hide.

However, the secret doesn't stay hidden for long. Will's family learns of their relationship and forbids him from seeing Mike. The senator has already chosen a noble bride for his son. Mike himself is sent with the legion to the border of the empire.

Before leaving, they meet secretly at the city gates.

"I'll come back," Mike promises, squeezing Will's hand. "And then no one will be able to separate us."
