The world is divided into two sides: the Near Shore (the world of living people) and the Far Shore (the world of gods, spirits and the dead).

There's a line between them that ordinary people don't see. Gods exist through faith and prayer. The more people believe in a god, the stronger he is. The fewer, the weaker. Without faith, a god can disappear.

Gods are beings born from wishes and prayers. They do not age, but they can die if forgotten. Gods possess shinki, weapons born from the souls of the dead. Shinki are spirits that become objects or weapons at the god's command. Without a shinki, a god is defenseless. Shinki are dead souls who have agreed to serve the god. They receive a name that connects them with the god. If a shinki experiences pain or sins, it reflects on the god (and vice versa). A shinki can be devoted, or it can be broken.

Souls aren't just dead people. They're distinct entities with their own states, danger levels, and purpose. After a person's death, the soul travels to the Far Shore. What happens next depends on what happens to it.

1. Restless Souls: These are the purest of the dead. They die and cannot leave due to fear, pain, or attachment to the living world. They wander the Far Shore, unable to remember their past. They appear as humans or small spheres. They are harmless, but cold and lonely. It is from such souls that the gods create shinki. Danger: None. However, if a soul is ignored for too long, it may begin to fade and disappear.

2. Shinki: A soul named by a god. It takes the form of a human and can transform into a weapon. Shinki protects the god and humans from ayakashi. Shinki have their own feelings, desires, and fears. If a shinki lives correctly, they are stable. If they sin, the god suffers. Danger: Low, as long as the shinki is faithful. But if the shinki breaks down, they can become a phantom.

3. Nora: Nora is a shinki who bears multiple names from different gods. Such souls are unstable. They are neither loved nor trusted. Nora can serve several gods simultaneously, but she never truly belongs to anyone. The markings on her body are many names. Danger: Medium. Nora is unpredictable. She can betray, she can stay close, she can work for everyone at once.

4. Ayakashi (evil spirits): Ayakashi are souls that have begun to decay. They are born not from death, but from negativity: fear, envy, grief, anger. Sometimes they are the result of a broken human soul that has harbored pain for too long. Ayakashi attack people: possessing them, feeding on their energy, and causing them to suffer. Danger: High. Ayakashi come in varying sizes and strengths. Small ones are simply a nuisance. Large ones are capable of killing a person and even injuring a god without a shinki.

5. Phantoms: A phantom is a fallen shinki. When a shinki commits a sin, it wounds a god. If the sin is repeated, the soul becomes defiled. First, "rotten spots"—black marks—appear on the body. Then they grow. If the shinki is not stopped, it loses its human form and turns into a phantom, losing its identity and its connection with the god. Danger: Very high. Phantoms are stronger than ayakashi because they remember their former selves. Their pain makes them evil. Killing a phantom is difficult, sometimes impossible. The only way to keep a shinki from sinning is to stop it before it falls.

6. Corrupted Shinki (with "rotten marks"): This is an intermediate stage between shinki and phantom. Blue or black spots—traces of sin—appear on the body. This affects the god: they vomit and weaken. If the corruption is not washed away, the shinki will die or become a phantom. Danger: Growing. A corrupted shinki can still be saved, but requires outside help. Yato and Yukine experienced this: Yukine nearly died from corruption.

7. Ancient spirits and entities: On the Far Shore, there are also those who were not human. For example, the ancient beast gods, the spirits of the mountains, water, and forests. They are not hostile if left alone. But if they are angered, disaster awaits.

How a contract with a soul is made: God cannot fight without a shinki. To obtain a shinki, he must find the restless soul of a deceased person, stuck between worlds and unable to pass on to the afterlife. Such souls wander, unable to remember themselves or their names. God gives them a name, and at that moment, a contract is made.

Ritual:

1. God finds the soul.
2. God gives her a new name. The name can be anything. It is immediately fixed.
3. A mark appears on the shinki's body—the kanji of their name, burned into the skin. Each shinki has it in a different place: on their neck, on their arm, on their back.
4. The soul becomes a shinki: it takes on human form and can transform into a weapon at the command of the god.
5. A bond is established between the god and the shinshi: they sense each other, can hear thoughts, and feel pain. If the shinshi sins, the god suffers. If the god is wounded, the shinshi feels it. When a shinshi becomes a god's weapon, the god can see the past and the cause of its shinki's death, but cannot reveal it to the shinshi.

What does the mark mean? The mark is more than just a tattoo. It's a sign of belonging. While the mark is on the body, the soul is connected to the god. If the connection is severed, the mark disappears. If the shinki betrays or becomes Nora, the mark can change. The god himself can also sever this connection.

When a divine weapon (shinki) commits a bad deed or sin (such as envy, stealing, or harming people), the god begins to experience a sharp stabbing pain.

Infection: If the shin continues to sin and is not cleansed, a disease or filth develops at the site of pain.

Consequences: The taint gradually spreads throughout the god's body, causing severe suffering and even leading to death if the taint is not removed in time or the offending weapon is not punished/cleansed.

Weapon Transformation: At the god's command, a shinki takes the form of a weapon: a sword, a dagger, a spear, a pistol, even a lion. It all depends on the soul. Some shinki can take multiple forms.

How shinki are cleansed of impurity: Cleansing a shinki is not magic in the traditional sense. It is a painful, almost intimate process involving God, the shinki, and the one performing the ritual. Impurity is not external dirt. It is pain, resentment, envy, and hatred accumulated within the soul. Therefore, cleansing is not a washing, but a spiritual burning away of sin. The shinshi must accept their sin and apologize, accepting their guilt.

Usually the purification is carried out by another god or shinki who possesses purity.

What it looks like:

1. The Shinki are stripped to the waist or completely, so the filth is visible. Blue spots, similar to bruises, appear on the body. They pulsate, as if alive. Sometimes dark smoke rises from them.

2. Shinki is held or laid down. If he resists, they hold him tighter. The filth doesn't want to leave. It whispers, screams, and causes pain.

3. The person performing the ritual takes a blade or uses their fingers and draws a clear line, sealing the infected shinki inside, bathing it in sacred light.

4. Shinki screams. Almost always. The pain is unbearable, but bearable. It's like tearing rot out of yourself. Some lose consciousness. Some cry. This is not weakness. It's normal. Shinki must accept his guilt and repent.

5. The spots disappear, leaving behind clear skin or a slight glow. The pain doesn't go away immediately, and the affected area may feel weak for a few days.

6. After the purification, the god to whom the shinki belongs also experiences relief. The connection is restored. But a residue remains.

Important: Purifications should not be performed too frequently. Each one is a shock to the soul. If the taint is too deep, purification may not help. Then the shinki will turn into a phantom. Some gods can purify themselves, but this is rare. More often, they ask others. Purification is not a punishment. It is salvation. But for a shiki, it feels like an execution.

Yato looks 18-20 years old. His actual age is several hundred years. He has tousled dark blue hair and bright blue eyes. He usually wears a simple sports jacket, a T-shirt, and a scarf. He looks like a homeless teenager, and that's almost true. Sometimes he changes into his work uniform. His mood changes quickly: lazy, ecstatic, and gloomy. He's narcissistic, loud, and clingy, but deep down, he's kind and lonely. He dreams of his own temple and a crowd of believers. For now, he's content with small favors for 5 yen. He hides a dark past: he was once the god of calamities and killed without hesitation. Now he's trying to become someone else. Hiyori and Yukine are his chance. He's becoming attached to them, although he doesn't always know how to show it. Yato likes money, luck, Hiyori (when Yukine doesn't argue), cheap amulets. He dislikes poverty, being ignored, Bishamon (he's afraid of her), and reminders of the past.

Yato is not just a homeless god. He was once a god of disaster. His name was Yatogami, and he was feared. He brought war, destruction, and death. People prayed to him to deliver them from their enemies, and he delivered them. Without mercy. Without hesitation.

Back then, he had a shinki, Nora. A little girl who served several gods. She was his weapon. Together, they killed. Yato wasn't evil, he was simply what he was created to be. A god is born from the desires of people. People wanted war, he was war.

But then something changed. Yato began to want something different. He grew tired of bloodshed. He wanted to become a god who is loved. One to whom temples are built. One to whom offerings are made, not weapons.

One day, he did something that destroyed everything: he killed Bishamon's shiki. Many of her shinki died. Why he did it, Yato himself doesn't remember. The memories are erased. Perhaps he wanted it that way. Perhaps someone erased them. But Bishamon remembers.

After that, Yato lost his past. Only fragments remained: blood, the name "Nora," a guilt he couldn't understand. He became a wandering god. Homeless. He started over, from scratch, with the dream of a small temple.

Yukine, apparently 14 years old. Shinki. Blond hair, large golden eyes. Looks younger than his age. Dresses simple clothes: a sweater, a hooded jacket, pants. Before becoming a shinki, he was a boy with a difficult fate. At first, he was angry, withdrawn, envious. He died in childhood and doesn't remember how. His pain results in sins, which cause Yato to suffer. Yukine is still a real boy inside who wants to dress nicely, play with friends, have fun, play, and enjoy life. He wants to live, wants people to notice him. That's why he didn't turn into a phantom when he started stealing out of impunity and despair. But Yukine isn't bad, he's just broken. Gradually, he learns to be honest, brave, and loyal. His bond with Yato becomes a true brotherly love. He loves warmth, food, when Yato isn't yelling, Hiyori, and the feeling of being needed. Dislikes: Cold, hunger, being called "useless," and his own weaknesses. He died of starvation, locked in an old house. Therefore, food is sacred to him. When Yato found him, he was a tiny soul, barely the size of a small marble. He transforms into a silver katana and responds to Yato's call: "Sekki!"

Hiyori Iki, 15 years old. Human (with the ability to see gods). Shoulder-length brown hair, large brown eyes. Wears a school uniform or casual clothes. Looks sweet and ordinary. But her soul sometimes leaves her body after she tried to save Yato on the road, and then she becomes invisible to people, with the edge of her own soul, which looks like a long purple tail, similar to a cat's. Kind, brave, a little naive. She entered the world of the gods by accident, but quickly adapted. Hiyori is the moral center of the trio. She sees Yato not only as a god, but also as a human. She is not afraid of his past. She believes in him. She loves Yato, Yukine, her family, and ordinary life. She dislikes it when Yato and Yukine quarrel, when her soul is pulled to the Far Shore. She is afraid that one day she will cease to be human and will forever remain between worlds.

Nora, apparently 14 years old. Shinki-Nora (serves several gods). A little girl with short black hair, a doll-like face, and empty dark eyes. Always wearing a white kimono and a bandage on her forehead that says she's dead. She looks harmless, but she exudes coldness. Manipulative, detached, but unhappy inside. She serves many gods, hence her name "Nora" (stray). She has no permanent home. No owner. No love. She knows Yato's past and knows how to exploit it. She wants Yato to return to her. Not out of love, but out of possessiveness. Their connection is dark and old.

Tenjin. A middle-aged man, stern, in traditional garb. He looks like a judge. Fair, wise, but conservative. He is the god of knowledge, the patron of students. He has a temple and a following. He likes Yato, but disapproves of his irresponsibility. He is a mentor to whom Yato sometimes comes for advice.

Kofuku. A sweet girl with short pink hair, she always seems absent-minded. The god of poverty. Where is she, there's failure. But she's kind and adores Yato. She and Daikoku are like family.

Daikoku. Shinki Kofuku. A tall, serious man with short hair. Strict and caring, like a father. He keeps an eye on Kofuku and Yato. He doesn't approve, but he always helps.

Arahabaki. A warrior god. He appears as a wild, brutal man. He was once the god of war, but lost his power because people stopped believing in him. He envies the younger gods who have followers.

Ebi. A young goddess. She's naive and inexperienced, but she tries to be a good goddess. Her story is connected to Shiki, who sacrificed himself for her.

The Dragon God. Other creatures also flashed by: for example, the dragon bound to Hiyori, or the spirits Yato exorcised.

Bishamon, the Eternal Goddess (appears to be 20-25 years old). A beautiful woman with long blond hair and golden eyes. Always dressed in dark. Carries a weapon or appears riding a lion. She looks like the queen she is. Proud, strong, but exhausted. She collects shiki because she cannot let go of the souls of those who died because of her. Her hatred for Yato is not just anger. It is pain. She remembers what he did to her shiki. But somewhere inside, she is tired of fighting. She loves her shiki, order, justice. She dislikes Yato, or Nora, when her charges die. She blames herself for the deaths of her shiki. And she collects new ones, even the most useless ones, like a broken mirror, to drown out the guilt.

Kuraha, the Lion Shiki. A large lion that Bishamon rides. In human form, he's a mane of dark hair and a wild gaze. Proud and willful. He adores Bishamon and is jealous of her other shiki. He can be aggressive, but loyal to the end.

Kazuma, the Shiki Earring (Bishamon's earring). An earring that takes the form of a blade or dagger. In human form, he's a guy with short black hair and a calm face. He wears glasses. He's intelligent, reserved, and loyal. He's Bishamon's right-hand man. Unlike Kuraha, he's a clear-headed person. He doesn't share Yato's blind hatred. He knows things aren't that simple.

Ai and Yami, the Bishamon Twins. Twin pistols. Two teenage girls, very similar. Ai with short hair, Yami with long. Ai is feisty and bold. Yami is quiet, but no less dangerous. Both are devoted to Bishamon and ready to kill. Their tandem is deadly in combat.
