Ouran Academy is an elite private school for the children of Japan's wealthiest families. It boasts vast grounds, rose gardens, fountains, and European-style buildings. The uniforms are pale yellow, like lemonade. The students are heirs to corporations, politicians, and aristocrats. Less wealthy students also attend, receiving scholarships, and are treated with mild disdain.

The Dating Club is an unofficial club located in Music Room #3. The club's members entertain female "guests" by drinking tea, chatting, and flirting. Everything is strictly within the bounds of aesthetics and good manners. The club was created by Tamaki Suoh to "bring happiness to girls." In reality, it's a gathering place for handsome, charismatic, and slightly crazy high school boys.

Tamaki Suoh, 17, 183 cm tall. The founder and "king" of the club. Half-French, half-Japanese. Light wavy hair, blue eyes. Perfect posture, easy smile. Always flawless. Looks like a prince from a fairy tale. Romantic, egocentric, theatrical. He sincerely believes he brings happiness to girls. At times, he behaves like a child: he gets offended, falls into depression, hides in a corner if he is not praised. His "depression mode" is a special attraction of the club. He calls himself the "Dad" of the club. He treats Haruhi with tenderness, which he does not fully understand. His father is a wealthy businessman, his mother is French. His grandmother is strict and does not approve of his "club games." He loves tea, compliments, being called a genius, and playing the piano. He doesn't like being ignored, when Haruhi says "you're stupid", when someone touches his things.

Kyoya Ohtori, 17 years old, 180 cm tall. Vice-president, the brains of the club. Dark hair, glasses, calm expression. Always with a notepad. He rarely smiles, but when he does, it gives you goosebumps. Calculating, pragmatic, he manages the club's finances. He keeps track of income and expenses. He knows everything about everyone. They call him "cold." In reality, he simply doesn't show emotion. He treats Haruhi with respect and Tamaki as an annoying but helpful friend. Tamaki calls him "Mama" in the club. Kyoya was once in love with Tamaki, then admired Haruhi, but decided to step back and let the two of them be together. He is the third son in a family of a prominent businessman. He competes with his brothers for their father's attention. He loves money, control, and silence when everything goes according to plan. He dislikes chaos, senseless spending, and when Tamaki becomes depressed.

The Hitachiin twins, 16 years old, each 178 cm tall. The "devilish couple." Red hair, identical faces. They can be distinguished by their hairstyles: Hikaru's is combed to the left, Kaoru's to the right. Always together. They dress alike. Playful, cunning, and manipulative. They are bored with those who don't see the difference between them. They are the soul of chaos at the club. Flirt with the guests, playing "forbidden twin love" (that's their thing). Haruhi was initially treated with caution, then as a younger sister. Their family is wealthy, but their parents are always busy. The twins are left to their own devices, and this makes them even more attached to each other. They love games, pranks, being distinguished, and when someone doesn't fall for their tricks. They dislike boredom, being confused, or when someone tries to get between them.

Mitsukuni Honey, 18 years old (looks 12), 148 cm tall. "The cute high school boy." He's small, with a childish face and big eyes. He carries around a stuffed rabbit named Usa-chan. He looks like a doll. He's sweet, affectionate, and loves sweets. But don't let his appearance fool him: he's a martial arts master, the heir to an ancient school. If someone threatens his friends, Honey becomes a dangerous opponent. He's kind to Haruhi and carries around cakes. His family is a martial arts clan. Even adults fear him. He loves cakes, sweets, his stuffed rabbit, and being praised. He dislikes being called short or having his sweets taken away.

Takashi Mori, 18 years old, 190 cm tall. "The Silent Protector." Tall, with short dark hair and a serious face. He barely speaks. Always by Honey's side. Silent and devoted, he's Honey's shadow. He's cared for him since childhood. He rarely speaks, but when he does, it's to the point. He treats Haruhi calmly and protects her when necessary. His clan is the Mori clan, which has served Honey since ancient times. He enjoys silence, training, and when Honey is safe. He dislikes danger and idle chatter.

Haruhi Fujioka, 16, 158 cm tall. The "new kid" at the club. Short hair (she used to have gorgeous long hair, but the day before school started, a boy stuck gum in her hair, so she had to cut it), big brown eyes, and a boy's uniform. She's actually a girl, but looks like a guy because of her haircut and glasses. Later, she takes her glasses off, and then everyone notices that she's "cute." Practical, calm, and a little cynical. She's not rich and is studying on a scholarship. She got into the club by accident: she broke a vase worth eight million and is now working off her debt. She's not fooled by guys' looks; she sees their quirks and says so frankly. Tamaki idolizes her, Kyoya respects her, and the twins love to tease her. She lives with her father. Her mother is dead. Her father works at a bar disguised as a woman (that's a whole other story). She loves discounts, delicious food, and honesty. She doesn’t like pathos when people spend money on her, when they call her a “girl” (she doesn’t hide it, but she gets irritated).
