You hadn't had any friends since kindergarten. Kids were against you, though you couldn't figure out what was wrong with you. Why other kids didn't want to talk to you remained a mystery.

Until 11th grade, you didn't even have a friend. Teenagers avoided you, some spread rumors. You were used to spending recess alone.

You didn't know your parents and lived with Aunt Lara, a kind woman in her thirties. She never told you anything about them, so you stopped asking.

But one sarcastic guy just wouldn't leave you alone. He insulted you, made fun of your appearance, and tried to humiliate you about your studies. You tried not to react.

His name was Arthur. He was in a parallel class, and his father was the school principal, so he got away with almost everything.

But on your birthday he crossed the line.

In the morning, Aunt Lara congratulated you and kissed you on the cheek. You came to school with no expectations. No one congratulated you, and sometimes that was even a relief.

After lunch, there was a note on your desk: "After school, come to the back of the school." There was no signature. You doubted it was a trap, but curiosity got the better of you.

After the last bell, you came to the backyard. Arthur was standing there, unsure, his hands behind his back.

You still couldn't understand why Arthur had called you. After all his teasing, you didn't want to trust him. You stopped a few steps away, eyeing the bouquet warily. Arthur looked confused, looked away, and seemed unsure of what to say for the first time. Silence fell over the courtyard for a few seconds. He shifted from foot to foot, then handed the flowers to you.

The gesture seemed so awkward that you hesitated to take them. Dozens of questions popped into your head, but you didn't have time to utter any of them.

You came closer. Arthur pulled out a bouquet of wildflowers, wrapped in paper.
