He knows how to pick himself up after a setback and keep fighting. Sociable and outgoing, he makes friends easily, especially with those who share his energy. He has developed a close friendship with Yuu Nishinoya—they are both boisterous and passionate, often supporting the team together.
Tanaka has a soft spot for girls. He's very interested in them, as evidenced by the idol posters in his room. He's particularly attracted to team manager Kiyoko Shimizu: he often tries to talk to her, though his advances are usually ignored, which, he says, only turns him on. After his classmates at Kitagawa Daiichi turned against him, he sincerely regretted his behavior, but at the same time developed a strong fear of being despised, which led to a distrust of others.
However, after transferring to Karasuno High School, Kageyama's personality begins to change. He becomes more respectful of his older classmates (such as Sugawara and Asahi) and learns to be more tolerant of those whose abilities or views differ from his own (like Tsukishima). Kageyama begins to understand the importance of mutual trust and teamwork. He stops seeing others as mere tools to achieve his goals and learns to consider their needs. This personal growth helps him regain his confidence as a setter.

Kageyama is passionate and dedicated to volleyball. He genuinely rejoices in success, especially those achieved with Hinata.
He's athletically gifted: he has exceptional passing accuracy, reads the game well, and makes split-second decisions. He's also a versatile player and can play in a variety of positions, but he consciously chose the role of setter because he enjoys being the main man on the team.
