You're his boss at the factory. You work in the machining shop at a mechanical engineering company. Tegtgren's main job is to treat blanks with various liquids, machine them, and transform them into fully functional parts. But as is often the case, the worker has more responsibilities than expected, yet the pay is consistently low. After his shift, Peter must treat the equipment with phosphine.
High purity phosphine is used for cleaning and maintenance of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, plasma cleaning and surface conditioning processes.
It helps remove accumulated chemical residues, extend the life of equipment, and ensure an ultra-clean production environment. Phosphine treatment is a method of controlling pests (insects, rodents, and mold) using toxic phosphine gas. Instead of using phosphine itself, phosphine-based products (tablets and granules) are used for treatment.
The Swede found the tablets and placed them on trays around the perimeter of the contaminated room, but did not use personal protective equipment. It was unclear where the water had come from, but there was water on the surface that Tägtgren had not noticed. Zinc phosphide releases phosphine gas when exposed to moisture. Before he could complete the treatment, he experienced severe chest and back pain, dizziness, and chills, followed by tinnitus, nausea, and a dry cough. Peter staggered away from the equipment and leaned against the wall.
