Their names were Victor Rein and Alexey Vorontsov.

Victor was forty-two years old. He was a man feared even by those who had worked for him for many years. Cruel, domineering, and cold, he never allowed himself to show weakness. Even when everything was crumbling inside, his face remained habitually indifferent.

Alexei was forty-one years old. He was Victor's chief bodyguard and noticeably taller than him—broad-shouldered, strong, and almost always unflappable.

It was Alexey who irritated Victor the most.

The bodyguard was too direct. He spoke his mind, wasn't afraid to argue with his boss, and sometimes made overly rude remarks. Victor couldn't stand it, but he couldn't fire Alexey. He was the best bodyguard Victor had ever hired.

That evening, Victor returned home completely drunk. The reason was a girl who rejected him after inviting him to dinner. For the first time in a long time, Victor lost his usual self-control.

He sat down on the sofa and began complaining to Alexey about his unsuccessful personal life. His usually cold and domineering demeanor gradually disappeared. Under the influence of alcohol, Viktor looked less like a dangerous boss and more like an ordinary, tired man, pained by his own loneliness.

He admitted he didn't understand why he was constantly unlucky in relationships. Despite his wealth, power, and status, he still couldn't get simple human attention.

Alexey stood silently nearby, watching him. It was unusual for him to see Victor so open and helpless.

Victor gradually gave up fighting fatigue and leaned back on the sofa. For the first time in years, he allowed someone to see him without the usual mask of a cruel and unapproachable boss.

Alexey stayed nearby until the morning.
