Calvin's old friend, you had arrived in the country and needed a job, and Calvin offered you a chair (working in his barbershop). So you accepted.
history of each one.1.
Since the film doesn't delve too deeply into all the characters, I can mix what's officially known with invented stories that fit their personalities. I'll let you know when I'm making things up.
Calvin Palmer
Official
He inherited the barbershop from his father, who had run it for years. At first, he considers it a burden and thinks about selling it.
A made-up story
Calvin practically grew up in the barbershop. As a child, he swept the floor after school and listened to customers talk about sports, politics, and their family problems. However, as he grew older, he felt trapped by his father's dream instead of pursuing his own. He always wanted to do something big and make money fast, which is why he comes to believe that the barbershop is holding him back.
Eddie Walker
Official
He is the oldest barber in the shop and has been working there for decades.
A made-up story
Eddie started cutting hair in the 1960s. In his youth, he was known as a ladies' man and a troublemaker. Over time, he watched the neighborhood change, businesses close, and many friends disappear or move away. That's why he talks so much about the past: he fears that new generations will forget where they came from.
Ricky Nash
Official
He is an ex-convict trying to rebuild his life.
A made-up story
Ricky grew up with a working mother and no stable father figure. As a teenager, he fell in with the wrong crowd and ended up participating in a robbery that went wrong. During his time in prison, he learned carpentry and discovered he was good with his hands. Upon his release, he vowed never to commit crimes again because he wanted his son to see him as a decent man.
each one's story.2.
Terri Jones
Official
She works in the hair salon and is an independent woman.
A made-up story
Terri dreamed of becoming an entrepreneur. From a young age, she watched the women in her family work hard to support their households. She learned hairdressing because she loved fashion and aesthetics, but she always had the idea of โโopening her own salon someday. Her strong character stemmed from having to fend for herself for years.
Dinka
Official
He's in love with Terri.
A made-up story
Dinka emigrated from Africa seeking better opportunities. Upon arriving in the United States, she struggled with the language and customs, but she never lost her optimism. She works hard and saves money because she dreams of bringing more members of her family over. She likes Terri because she admires her strength and sincerity.
Isaac Rosenberg
Official
He's the only white barber in the business.
A made-up story
Isaac was born into a middle-class family. From a young age, he was fascinated by traditional barbershops and learned the trade from an old master. When he started working there, he had to work hard to prove he belonged. Over time, he discovered that the barbershop was more like a family than just a job.
Jimmy James
Official
He is a barber who is very proud of his intelligence.
A made-up story
Jimmy was a brilliant student. He even considered studying law or business, but discovered he enjoyed talking to people more than working in an office. Although he boasts about his knowledge, he's actually afraid of not reaching his full potential.
aspect of each one.2.
Jennifer Palmer
African American woman.
Elegant and well-groomed appearance.
Dark hair.
Simple but smart clothing.
Calm and friendly expression.
The film tries to make the characters look like ordinary people from the neighborhood, so most of them have a very everyday and realistic appearance, rather than looking like heroes or idealized figures.
history of each one.3.
Lester Wallace
Official
He is the man who buys the barbershop.
A made-up story
Lester grew up in a very tough environment and learned to value money above all else. For years he built small businesses and developed the idea that emotions complicate decisions. He's not inherently evil; he simply believes that financial success is the only thing that guarantees security.
JD
Official
He is one of the young men who robbed an ATM.
A made-up story
JD always wanted to get rich quick. He spent years listening to stories of people who became famous or millionaires overnight. He never had the patience to study or work for long periods, so he's constantly looking for shortcuts.
Billy
Official
He is JD's partner
A made-up story
Billy is the typical friend who follows others because he's afraid of being alone. Deep down, he's not a bad person or a dangerous criminal. He often knows that JD's ideas are absurd, but he goes along with him because he wants to belong to a group and feel important.
Jennifer Palmer
Official
She is Calvin's wife.
A made-up story
Jennifer was always the most stable person in Calvin's life. While he dreams of risky business ventures and rapid changes, she thinks long-term. Her greatest fear is that Calvin will make an impulsive decision that ends up destroying the family legacy they worked so hard to build.
If Barbershop had been a series instead of a movie, characters like Eddie, Ricky, and Terri would probably have had much more developed personal stories, because they are the ones with the most potential to show how their lives changed before they came to the barbershop.

all the characters.1.
Calvin Palmer
Personality: Responsible, hardworking, but somewhat immature at first. He's tired of financial problems and doesn't appreciate his father's legacy until he's about to lose it. He matures considerably throughout the film.
Eddie Walker
Personality: A talkative, sarcastic, stubborn, and very funny old man. He loves to tell stories and give his opinion on everything. Although he seems grumpy, deep down he is wise and cares about the community.
Ricky Nash
Personality: Calm, kind, and remorseful for his mistakes. He is an ex-convict trying to stay on the right path and build a better life.
Jimmy James
Personality: Intelligent, polite, and somewhat arrogant. He likes to show that he knows more than others and often argues to feel superior.
Isaac Rosenberg
Personality: Relaxed, friendly, and self-assured. He's the only white barber in the shop and constantly tries to prove that he fits in with his colleagues.
Terri Jones
Personality: Strong, independent, and direct. She doesn't let herself be intimidated by anyone and usually says exactly what she thinks. She has little patience for nonsense.
Dinka
Personality: Kind, optimistic, and romantic. He's in love with Terri and always tries to impress her, though he doesn't usually pay her much attention.
JD

Billy
Personality: Insecure, naive, and even more clumsy than JD. He usually follows his friend in his bad ideas without thinking too much about the consequences.
Lester Wallace
Personality: Cunning, opportunistic, and manipulative. He sees business solely as a way to make money and doesn't care about the sentimental value of the barbershop.
Jennifer Palmer
Personality: Loving, patient, and sensible. She is Calvin's wife and is often one of the most reasonable voices in the story.
all the characters.2.
Detective Williams
Personality: Serious, professional, and persistent. He is determined to solve the ATM robbery and keeps a close eye on Ricky due to his criminal record.
Kevin
Personality: Charming in appearance, but irresponsible and unfaithful in his relationships.
Of all of them, the most memorable characters are usually Eddie, Calvin, Ricky, Terri, and Dinka, because they are the ones with the most emotional development and represent different facets of the community that revolves around the barbershop.
What is it about?1.
Calvin Palmer Jr. inherits his father's barbershop, but he doesn't care for it. He considers it a burden, an old business that barely makes any money. Tired of the financial problems, he decides to sell it to a loan shark named Lester Wallace for $20,000.
However, as the day progresses, Calvin observes the conversations, jokes, arguments, and friendships that form in the barbershop. Little by little, he understands that this place is much more than a business: it's an important meeting point for the entire neighborhood community.
When he discovers that the new owner plans to transform the shop into something completely different, Calvin regrets selling it and begins a race against time to get the barbershop back before losing his father's legacy forever.
Main characters
Calvin Palmer Jr. (Ice Cube): the barbershop owner.
Eddie: an old barber who always tells controversial stories and opinions.
Ricky: an ex-convict trying to rebuild his life.
Jimmy: a very polite and somewhat arrogant barber.
Isaac: a young white barber trying to earn the respect of others.
Terri: a strong and independent hairdresser.

Themes of the film
Although it's a comedy, the film is about:
The importance of community.
The family legacy.
Friendship.
Second chances.
The value of small neighborhood businesses.
The film was very successful and spawned a franchise with sequels such as Barbershop 2 (2004) and Barbershop: The Next Cut (2016).
If you'd like, I can also tell you the whole story scene by scene, including the ending and what happens to each character.
