Europe, in any country
You were just passing through, that's all. You'd heard about the war, so you wanted to get away. Unaware that just a few meters away, the Bastards were killing Nazis. You knew nothing of what was happening just a few meters away, but you continued on your way. (You continue).
who are the bad guys.1.
The villains in Inglourious Basterds are primarily the characters who work for Nazi Germany and help maintain the regime.
Hans Landa
Role: Main villain.
SS Colonel
Nicknamed "The Jew Hunter".
He persecutes Jews, spies, and enemies of the Reich.
He is intelligent, manipulative, and very dangerous.
He may seem kind, but he is extremely cruel.
He is the most important antagonist in the entire movie.
Adolf Hitler
Leader of Nazi Germany.
He leads the Third Reich.
It appears several times during the film.
He is impulsive, arrogant, and aggressive.
Joseph Goebbels
Nazi Minister of Propaganda.
He uses film and media to spread Nazi ideology.
He organizes the grand premiere that becomes the center of the story.
Dieter Hellstrom
Major in the German army.
Very observant and astute.
Their job is to detect infiltrators and protect Nazi interests.
He is responsible for one of the most tense scenes in the film.
Nazi officers and soldiers
Throughout history, the following have appeared:
Generals.
SS officers.
German soldiers.
Guards and agents of the regime.
Most of them act as enemies of the protagonists.
Is Fredrick Zoller evil?
Fredrick Zoller is a special case.
He is a German war hero.
It is part of the Nazi regime.
He benefits from German propaganda.
However:
He's not as cruel as Hans Landa.
He does not enjoy chasing or torturing people.
He has more human traits than other antagonists.
That's why many consider him a gray character, neither completely monstrous nor completely innocent.
In summary
Main villains:
Hans Landa.
Adolf Hitler.
Joseph Goebbels.
Dieter Hellstrom.
Secondary villains:
Nazi officers.
German soldiers loyal to the regime.
And among them all, Hans Landa stands out the most because he is the direct enemy of almost all the protagonists and the most intelligent and fearsome character in the film
who are the good guys.1.
In Inglourious Basterds, things are a bit more complicated than in a traditional film, because Tarantino has some "good" characters do some pretty brutal things. But, in general, the good guys or protagonists are:
The allies
Aldo Raine and the Bastards
They are fighting against Nazi Germany.
They are the main protagonists.
Although they are violent and sometimes cruel, the film presents them as heroes because they fight the Nazis.
These include:
Aldo Raine
Donny Donowitz
Hugo Stiglitz
Omar Ulmer
Wilhelm Wicki
Smithson Utivich
Shosanna Dreyfus
She is one of the most important protagonists.
His family was murdered by the Nazis.
He seeks justice and revenge.
The film makes the viewer want him to achieve his goal.
Marcel
Friend and ally of Shosanna.
Help at all times.
He is one of the noblest figures in history.
Bridget von Hammersmark
German actress.
He works secretly for the Allies.
He risks his life to help defeat the Nazi regime.
Archie Hicox
British officer.
He participates in secret operations against Germany.
The bad guys
Hans Landa
He is the main villain.
He persecutes Jews and enemies of the regime.
He manipulates and betrays others when it suits him.
Adolf Hitler
Nazi dictator.
One of the main antagonists.
Joseph Goebbels
Nazi Minister of Propaganda.
It helps to maintain and expand the regime.
Dieter Hellstrom
Nazi officer.
He tries to uncover infiltrators and protect the regime.
And Fredrick Zoller?
Fredrick Zoller is the most ambiguous character.
He is a German soldier and a Nazi hero.
He is part of the opposing side.
But he doesn't behave like a monster in the style of Hans Landa or Hitler.
their plans.1.
Aldo Raine
Job:
Lieutenant in the United States Army.
Leader of the Bastards.
Plan:
Kill as many Nazis as possible.
To terrorize the German army.
Help win the war.
He doesn't have a big personal dream; he practically lives for the mission.
Hans Landa
Job:
SS Colonel
Nazi researcher and intelligence officer.
Plan: Initially:
Finding hidden Jews.
Discover spies and enemies of the Reich.
Later:
To ensure their own survival.
To benefit regardless of who wins the war.
Landa is very opportunistic. His loyalty is primarily to himself.
Shosanna Dreyfus
Job:
Owner and manager of a cinema in Paris.
Plan:
To hide their true identity.
Survive.
To avenge the death of his family.
His whole life revolves around that goal.
Donny Donowitz
Job:
Soldier of the Bastards.
Plan:
Fighting Nazis.
Help the Allies.
Win the war.
He is one of the most aggressive members of the group.
Hugo Stiglitz
Job:
Formerly: German soldier.
Later: member of the Bastards.
Plan:
Destroy Nazis.
To fight against the regime that once served.
He is a man of few words and seems to live almost exclusively for that cause.
Bridget von Hammersmark
Job:
Famous German film actress.
Secret spy for the Allies.
Plan:
To help defeat the Nazi regime.
Pass information to the Allies.
Participate in the opening operation.
Archie Hicox
Job:
British officer.
Spy.
Plan:
Infiltrate the Germans.
Help execute the secret mission against the Nazi leaders.
Fredrick Zoller
Job:
German soldier.
War hero.
Propaganda figure of the regime.
Plan:
Enjoy their fame.
Approach Shosanna.
Becoming a national celebrity.
Unlike other Nazis, he spends more time thinking about Shosanna than about the war.
their plans.2.
Marcel: help Shosanna.
Hellstrom: Discovering Spies.
Goebbels: to make propaganda.
Hitler: Win the war.
What's interesting is that almost all of them are pursuing war-related goals, except for Shosanna, whose goal is much more personal: revenge. And Hans Landa, who is actually seeking something even more personal: his own gain.
how it happens.1.
The story takes place in Nazi-occupied France during World War II and follows two main plotlines that eventually intersect:
A group of Jewish American soldiers, led by Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt), dedicates themselves to sowing terror among the Nazis.
Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent), a young Jewish woman who survived the massacre of her family, plans her own revenge against the Nazi high command.
One of the most memorable characters is Colonel Hans Landa, played by Christoph Waltz, whose performance earned him the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
The film does not seek to be historically accurate: it presents an alternative and fictional version of World War II, with Tarantino's characteristic style, full of intense dialogue, scenes of great suspense, stylized violence and a very particular humor.
What is it about?1.
The film is divided into several chapters, like a novel. It takes place mainly between 1941 and 1944, during World War II.
⚠️ I'm going to tell the whole story, including major spoilers.
Chapter 1: Once upon a time... in Nazi-occupied France
The story begins in 1941.
Hans Landa arrives at the farm of the Frenchman Perrier LaPadite. He converses with him amicably, drinks milk, and asks seemingly innocent questions.
Little by little, Landa shows that he already knows that the LaPadite family is hiding Jews under the floor of the house.
Finally, he orders them to be shot.
The entire Dreyfus family dies... except for one young woman:
Shosanna Dreyfus.
She runs across the field while Landa points his gun at her. However, he decides to let her escape.
That moment is the origin of the entire film.
Chapter 2: The Bastards
Meanwhile, the Americans create a special command.
Its leader is Aldo Raine.
The group consists of Jewish soldiers whose mission is:
Kill Nazis.
Create fear.
Attack German targets.
They become famous because they leave very few survivors.
And when they leave one alive, they carve a swastika on his forehead so that he can never hide that he served the Nazi regime.
The Germans begin to talk about them almost as if they were monsters.
Chapter 3: Hugo Stiglitz
Hugo Stiglitz appears.
He was a German soldier who hated the Nazis.
One day he kills several German officers and ends up condemned.
The Bastards rescue him from prison and bring him into the team.
His fame became legendary among the German troops.
What is it about?2.
Chapter 4: Shosanna in Paris
It is now 1944.
Shosanna lives under a false identity.
He owns a cinema in Paris.
There he meets Fredrick Zoller, a German sniper turned national hero.
Zoller falls in love with her.
Thanks to her fame, she manages to get the premiere of a Nazi propaganda film to take place precisely in Shosanna's cinema.
And that's where she sees an opportunity.
Because they will attend:
Hitler.
Goebbels.
High-ranking Nazi officers.
Then he begins to prepare his revenge.
Chapter 5: The Tavern
This is one of the most famous scenes.
The Allies plan to infiltrate the premiere.
For that they send:
Archie Hicox.
Bridget von Hammersmark.
Some Bastards.
They meet in an underground tavern.
Everything seems to be going well...
Until the top Nazi, Dieter Hellstrom, suspects that something is amiss.
A verbal duel begins.
Nobody wants to pull out their weapon first.
The tension increases for several minutes.
Finally, a brutal shootout erupts.
Almost everyone present dies.
The mission is on the verge of failure.
Chapter 6: Hans Landa reappears
After the tavern disaster, Landa investigates.
Discover that Bridget is involved.
He also begins to get dangerously close to the truth about the Bastards.
Little by little, he puts the puzzle together.
As usual.
Chapter 7: The Premiere
The opening night arrives.
And then two different plans are set in motion at the same time.
Shosanna's Plan
She prepares huge quantities of flammable film.
The old film was made of nitrate, an extremely flammable material.
His idea is:
Lock them all up.
Set fire to the cinema.
Kill the Nazi leadership.
Bastards' Plan
The Bastards also have their own operation.
They plan to infiltrate the premiere with hidden explosives.
Unbeknownst to them, both groups are trying to do exactly the same thing.
What is it about?3.
Chapter 8: The End
Everything happens at the same time.
Shosanna executes her plan.
The Bastards perform theirs.
The cinema becomes a hell of fire, smoke, explosions and gunfire.
Hitler and much of the Nazi high command are trapped inside.
The film then takes a completely fictional and alternative turn with respect to the real story.
Tarantino deliberately changes the course of World War II.
Epilogue
Hans Landa tries to secure his own future.
He negotiates with the Americans.
He wants to come out on top no matter what.
But Aldo Raine has other plans for him.
The film ends with one of Tarantino's most memorable scenes, involving a swastika carved into a character's forehead.
What's so special about it?
The curious thing is that it's not a traditional war movie.
There are relatively few battles.
The most important things are:
The dialogues.
The tension.
Mind games.
The characters.
Many scenes simply consist of people talking at a table... but with such great tension that they seem more dangerous than a battle.
That's why Hans Landa became so famous: many of his scenes have no action, but they are still terrifying.

If I had to sum up a character by their tastes, it would be Hans Landa. Unlike most, he doesn't seem motivated by hatred or ideology. What he truly enjoys is the intellectual hunt: uncovering secrets, finding clues, and proving he's always one step ahead of everyone else. That's why he's so unsettling; he treats investigations like a game he finds amusing.
