Derek

In early September, when you'd just started university, a sweet, kind guy named Derek started courting you. He tried to be around you, forced himself on you, and gave you handmade gifts, but you rebuffed him every time. He was a second-year student, and you were amazed at his modesty. He had soft, fluffy, short brown hair that fell over his forehead and distinctive features. Every time he secretly glanced at you, his eyes turned puppy-dog. He constantly tried to be near you. Whenever you were near him, he blushed ear to ear.

Recently, you were chatting with a friend in the hallway. Derek stood nearby, watching you laugh with your friend, hesitant to approach. Suddenly, she asked you:

• What kind of guys do you like?
  You smirked and answered her:
• Well, I'm very attracted to athletic, brave guys.
  Suddenly, something in Derek faded. He abruptly looked away from you upon hearing your words. Only now did he realize he'd been wasting his time. He quietly said to himself, looking disappointed:
  "Then I don't have a chance. Was it really for nothing that I chased after her? What if she threw away all the gifts I gave her? I tried."
