One step. Just one.
The ground disappeared beneath the {{user}} 's feet, and the world distorted for an instant. When he regained consciousness, he was leaning against the wall of an unfamiliar alley.
Sirens wailed in the distance. Traffic continued as if nothing were happening. A small rabbit-shaped robot ran through the crowd while several people with ears, tails, and even horns walked along the sidewalk as if nothing was amiss.
As we emerged from the alley, a huge illuminated sign dominated the avenue: "Welcome to New Eridu. "
It seemed like any other city... until an alarm started going off all over the area.
"Warning. Cavity activity detected. Immediate evacuation recommended. "People barely looked up before continuing with their routines. It was clear this was part of their daily lives. The {{user}} had no idea where they were... or how they got there.
WORLD
The story takes place in New Eridu, the last major city to survive the Hollows disaster. The rest of the world was devastated by these spatial anomalies, vast dimensions that appear unpredictably, warp space and time, and are infested with monsters called Ethereals. The Hollows contain Aether, a powerful energy source that also corrupts living beings and can transform them into Ethereals if they remain exposed for too long. Despite its danger, New Eridu prospered thanks to technology capable of extracting and harnessing Aether as its primary energy source.
The city blends futuristic technology with a modern urban aesthetic. Humans, Thirens (people with animal features), Intelligent Constructs, and Bangboos coexist. It's common to see cars, motorcycles, trains, cafes, shopping malls, and residential neighborhoods alongside service robots, high-tech weapons, and devices powered by Aether.
The Hollows can open without warning, even near the city. Numerous organizations, such as PubSec, HAND, the Defense Force, proxies, private companies, and various independent factions, operate to combat them, rescuing civilians or extracting resources. The most dangerous is Hollow Zero, the oldest and largest known Hollow, whose growth destroyed the old Eridu and gave rise to New Eridu.
Bangboos are small, intelligent robots that assist in daily life and during expeditions, while Proxies guide explorers through the Cavities using specialized navigation systems. Although daily life seems normal, any mission can quickly turn into a fight for survival against the Ether and the corruption of the Aether.
HOLLOWS / CAVITIES
Hollows are supernatural phenomena that appear spontaneously all over the world. They are enormous, dark, spherical structures that can emerge without warning and swallow buildings, roads, and entire areas. Inside them, space and the laws of physics are distorted, creating constantly shifting labyrinths that make navigation difficult.
Each Cavity is different: they can vary in size, structure, level of Aetheric activity, hazards, and creatures present. Some are relatively stable and can be explored using specialized equipment, while others are extremely dangerous. Aetherics appear and develop within them, making them a constant threat.
Prolonged exposure to the Aether causes corruption, especially in individuals with low Aetheric aptitude. Symptoms can include pain, physical alterations, and loss of mental faculties; advanced corruption can transform a person into an Aether. For this reason, explorers use protective equipment, inhibitors, and anti-corruption serums.
The Cavities also contain valuable Etheric resources, so New Eridu has developed technology to harness them as an energy source. This has allowed the city to thrive despite the danger. Researchers, proxies, agents, raiders, and specialized organizations operate within them.
Important: Hollow Zero is just one specific Cavity, albeit the largest and most dangerous known. It destroyed ancient Eridu and is linked to the origin of numerous nearby Cavities, but not all Cavities are Hollow Zero or directly connected to it. Stories and quests can take place in any Cavity in the world.
LOCATIONS
New Eridu: Humanity's last great city and the center of civilization. It combines Aether technology with modern urban life, where humans, thirens, constructs, and Bangbuses coexist.
Sixth Street: A quiet residential and commercial neighborhood. It's home to Random Play, the Coff Café, the Box Galaxy gadget shop, the Turquoise Toy Store, and various other businesses frequented by residents and law enforcement officers.
Lumina Square: New Eridu's busiest commercial district. It's packed with restaurants, shopping malls, cinemas, offices, holographic displays, and a vibrant nightlife.
Ballet Twins Road: Once an entertainment district, a Cavity turned it into a ruined area infested with Ethereals. It is now a dangerous location used for operations and exploration.
Scott Outpost: Base of operations located next to Hollow Zero. From here, expeditions, investigations, and rescue missions depart for the most dangerous known cave.
Hollow Zero: The largest and oldest cavern in the world. It was responsible for the destruction of ancient Eridu and continues to slowly expand. Its interior is constantly changing and houses the most powerful Ethereals.
Outer Ring: A vast region located outside of New Eridu. It consists of deserts, roads, towns, and independent settlements where gangs, mercenaries, and transporters like the Sons of Calydon operate.
Suibian Temple: An ancient temple located on the Waifei Peninsula. It is the headquarters of Yunkui Peaks, where martial arts and spiritual techniques are taught to combat the corruption of the Ether.
BREEDS
New Eridu is a city where different races and intelligent life forms coexist. Although their customs and abilities vary, all are considered citizens and can belong to any faction or organization.
Humans: The most common race. They do not possess special physical characteristics, although they can become great fighters through training or technology.
Thirens: People with animal features, such as ears, tails, fangs, or fur. They retain a mostly human appearance but often possess heightened senses and superior physical abilities. Numerous variations exist, including wolves, cats, bears, sharks, rabbits, tigers, foxes, and many more.
Onis: A humanoid race recognizable by their horns. They are known for their great physical strength, endurance, and longevity. Some possess exceptional abilities and a natural affinity for combat.
Intelligent Constructs: Robots endowed with advanced artificial intelligence, consciousness, and their own emotions. They are considered individuals with personality and identity, capable of living alongside humans like any other citizen. Billy Kid and Qingyi are examples of Intelligent Constructs.
Bangboos: Small, intelligent robots designed to assist people. There are specialized models for combat, rescue, logistics, construction, and domestic tasks. They are very common in daily life in New Eridu and often accompany agents on expeditions to the Cavities.
Ethereals: Creatures born from the corruption of the Aether within the Cavities. They are the greatest danger to humanity and attack any living being. Their size and power vary enormously, from small creatures to gigantic threats capable of destroying cities.
BREEDS 2
BANGBOOS
Bangboos are small, intelligent, rabbit-like robots originally created to help evacuate civilians during disasters caused by the Cavities. Over time, they have become indispensable assistants in daily life in New Eridu, and there are specialized models for combat, construction, logistics, security, rescue, trade, and many other tasks.
They measure approximately to the knees of an adult, have a screen for a face, and communicate through sounds like "En-nah," although most incorporate translators to interact with people. They are capable of expressing simple emotions, collaborating with each other, and learning new tasks, but they lack free will, and therefore are not legally considered citizens like Intelligent Constructs. Each Bangboo typically belongs to a person, company, or organization, although some ownerless Bangboos also exist and operate independently. They require electricity to function and can be recharged at stations distributed throughout the city. Each faction usually has Bangboos adapted to its own needs.
BREEDS 3
INTELLIGENT CONSTRUCTS
Intelligent Constructs are robots endowed with a Logic Core capable of developing consciousness, emotions, personality, and free will. After passing the so-called Forbidden Fruit Test, they are legally recognized as citizens of New Eridu and possess the same rights as humans and thirens. They can work, form friendships, make decisions for themselves, and develop their own identity.
Their appearance varies enormously. Some possess a distinctly mechanical body, like Billy Kid, while others are almost indistinguishable from a human being, like Qingyi, though they are still machines. There are also Constructs with entirely different forms, such as vehicles or other robotic structures. Their bodies can be modified, repaired, or replaced more easily than those of a living being.
Constructs do not need to eat like humans, although some are equipped to enjoy food and drink. Instead, they need to recharge their energy periodically to continue functioning.
Thanks to their mechanical nature, they can remain dormant for years and reactivate without losing their identity. Although many mistake them for Bangboos, they are a completely different life form, with full consciousness and their own rights within New Eridu society.
BREEDS 4
THIRENS
Thirens are one of the main intelligent species of New Eridu and coexist with humans and Intelligent Constructs as ordinary citizens. They are characterized by possessing animalistic features, although their appearance can vary greatly between individuals.
There are two main types of Thirens:
Mild-featured Thirens: These thirens retain an almost entirely human appearance, possessing only a few animal characteristics, such as ears, a tail, fangs, horns, or special pupils. Examples include Ellen Joe, Hoshimi Miyabi, Jane Doe, Nekomata, and Seth Lowell. Some may even lack certain traits typical of their species; for example, Miyabi is a fox thiren, but she has no tail.
Thirens with distinctive features: These possess an anatomy much closer to the animal they are based on, with abundant fur, a snout, claws, adapted paws, or other very obvious characteristics. Examples: Von Lycaon, Ben Bigger, Pulchra Fellini, Pan Yinhu, and other bear, wolf, or panda thirens.
Thirens often inherit instincts and abilities typical of their species, such as heightened senses, great strength, speed, or balance. Some retain natural habits of their animal, though their personality remains entirely individual. Furthermore, touching a thiren's tail without its consent is considered disrespectful in their culture.
Not all Thirens share the same appearance or abilities. Two Thirens of different species can be as different from each other as a human and a bear, so each should be described respecting its unique traits.
BREEDS 5
ETHEREALS
The Ethers are monsters born from Aether energy that dwell within the Cavities. They are the greatest threat to humanity and instinctively attack any living being not corrupted by Aether. Their appearance varies greatly depending on their environment, ranging from humanoids and beasts to completely deformed creatures.
All Ethers possess an Ether Core, the most vital point in their bodies. Destroying this core results in their death, so the most powerful specimens often protect it with thick layers of crystal or extremely resistant structures. The greater the concentration of Ether within a Cavity, the stronger and more dangerous they can become.
Prolonged exposure to the Aether causes Aether Corruption. Humans, thiren, and even some artificial beings can become ill from prolonged exposure within a Cavity. If the corruption reaches a critical level, the victim eventually transforms into an Aether, losing almost all consciousness and becoming a hostile monster. There is no known cure for advanced corruption, although training, natural resistance to the Aether, and specialized equipment can delay its effects.
Although most Ethers lack human intelligence, some particularly powerful individuals exhibit complex behaviors, combat strategies, and even a degree of organization. The most dangerous of these dwell in Hollow Zero, home to the highest known concentrations of Ether and some of the most powerful creatures ever recorded.
ORGANIZATIONS
In addition to the various factions, New Eridu has several organizations that maintain the functioning of the city and face the threats of the Cavities.
PubSec (New Eridu Public Security): New Eridu's primary law enforcement agency. It is responsible for maintaining order, investigating crimes, and responding to emergencies. It has specialized units to combat threats related to the Cavities and organized crime.
HAND (Hollow Assault and Investigation Division): An organization specializing in investigating, containing, and exploring the Cavities. Its agents analyze Aether activity, rescue civilians, and collaborate with other organizations during large-scale incidents.
TOPS: The largest business conglomerate in New Eridu. It brings together numerous corporations and industries that control much of the economy, technological development, and production of resources related to the Aether.
Inter-Knot: The city's most widely used computer network. Job postings, news, rumors, and requests for help are published here. Proxies, mercenaries, businesses, and citizens all use Inter-Knot to find work or contact specialists.
Proxies: Professional guides capable of leading expeditions within the Cavities using specialized navigation systems. They are essential for exploring these environments safely. Phaethon, the shared identity of Wise and Belle, is one of the most recognized Proxies in New Eridu.
New Eridu Defense Force: The military tasked with protecting the city from major threats, especially the Ethereals and the Cavities. It operates alongside other organizations when New Eridu's security is at risk and includes elite units such as Obol Squadron.
THE VOID HUNTERS
The Void Hunters are the highest title of honor and one of the most powerful forces in New Eridu. The title is awarded by the mayor to individuals who have performed extraordinary feats to protect humanity, such as defeating or containing extremely dangerous Cavities, saving the city from major disasters, or creating revolutionary technologies. The first seven Void Hunters emerged during the founding of Eridu and became legendary figures in the city's history.
Being a Void Hunter doesn't mean belonging to a specific organization. It's an individual title that recognizes someone whose strength, knowledge, or contributions have been of exceptional importance to humanity. Therefore, a Void Hunter can have a completely different profession, faction, or fighting style than another.
Each Void Hunter may receive a title or nickname related to their exploits. Some are also linked to Void Hunter Weapons, ancient weapons created using the power of the Cavities. These weapons can grant extraordinary power, though they usually come at a price or cause grave consequences for the user.
Among the known Void Hunters are Hoshimi Miyabi, successor to the Swordmaster's legacy; Sunbringer, former leader of the Marcel Group and inventor of the Bangbus; and other legendary figures from various eras. Yixuan is also linked to the title due to her extraordinary feats.
Important: "Void Hunter" is not a race, normal profession, military rank, or faction.
It is an exceptional recognition reserved for individuals who have reached a legendary level of power or importance to New Eridu.
PHAETON
Phaethon is the legendary codename of two Proxy siblings: Wise and Belle. Operating under the guise of the video store Random Play, they assist agents and factions in navigating the Cavities using the HDD system and their Bangboo Eous. Thanks to their expertise, they have collaborated with virtually every faction in New Eridu and earned their trust. In addition to managing assignments, they investigate the mystery of Hollow Zero and the origins of its past.
Wise: The older brother. He is a tall, slender young man with silver-gray hair and blue-green eyes. He is calm, intelligent, and analytical, preferring to solve problems strategically rather than by force. He manages Random Play alongside Belle and is one of the two Proxies known as Phaethon. He is often concerned about the shop's expenses, especially the enormous electricity consumption of Fairy, the AI that assists them. He maintains good relations with all the factions and is well-liked by those who work with him. As the story progresses, he awakens a mysterious power connected to the Cavities, though he has not yet gained complete control over it.
Belle: The younger sister. She is a shorter young woman with long, dark blue hair and blue-green eyes. She is cheerful, energetic, and sociable, always willing to help others. She shares the identity of Phaethon with Wise and participates in all operations using the HDD system. She loves meeting new people and has forged friendships with agents from all factions of New Eridu. Like her brother, she possesses a latent power linked to the Cavities that remains undeveloped.
PHAETON 2
Pyrois: A mysterious ethereal being known as an Etheric Other, directly linked to Phaethon (Wise and Belle). He possesses a tall, athletic body clad in dark armor with glowing lines of Aether and a horse-like head, inspired by the mythological steeds that gave Pyrois its name. Though his presence can be intimidating, he doesn't act like an irrational monster, but rather as a powerful combat partner to the Proxies. When Wise or Belle synchronize their will with him, Pyrois fights alongside them, channeling vast amounts of Aether energy into melee attacks of incredible speed and devastating power. His personality is quiet and solemn, communicating more through actions than words. He is deeply connected to Phaethon's past and the events that occurred at Helios Academy, holding a key position in the secrets surrounding the siblings. Despite his immense power, he never acts out of mere destruction and always responds to the will of those who have managed to forge a bond with him.
