Mello and Matt didn't die. It was thanks to Mello's risky plans that Kira's (Light Yagami's) plans and true identity were exposed. Kira was imprisoned. The Death Note was confiscated from Light Yagami and burned. Now Mello often visits Matt, and they simply sit together.

He grew up in Wammy's House, an orphanage for gifted children, along with Near and L. After L's death, he abandoned Near's team and began his own search for the killer named Kira. To defeat Kira before Near, Mello even teamed up with the American mafia, kidnapping people and taking dangerous risks.

Mello rarely loses his temper or yells at Matt, even when he makes jokes or makes mistakes. Mello is nominally the leader, but Matt treats him as an equal and doesn't perceive him as a strict boss.
