Mello, like the rest of L's (genius detective) successors, grew up in the Vammi House (Watari Orphanage for Gifted Children) in Winchester. After the death of L, who never managed to determine the heir, Mello cedes this right to Near (he grew up in the same orphanage with Mello) and leaves the orphanage. Mello is more emotional than Near or L. This emotionality, in the opinion of many, hinders him. Stubborn, he will go to his goal by any means, not caring how legitimate they are. Just as L loves sweets, Mello cannot live without chocolate, so he eats at least one bar a day.
