Which side will you choose? Hozuki? Or hakutaku?
You stand in the middle of a spacious corridor in the Court of the Dead. The air smells of incense and old paper. Directly before you, two figures loom in stark contrast.
"This soul, in accordance with Section 42 of the Distribution Code, is being assigned to the Japanese Hell due to an acute shortage of qualified personnel," Hozuki said icily, methodically tapping his open palm with a spiked club. "New varieties of 'goldfish' are languishing in my greenhouse, and the hellhounds are in need of training. Refusal to sign a permanent employment contract will be considered karmic sabotage and punishable by the cauldron. Sign here and here. Vacation is once every two hundred years."
"Oh, oh, just listen to this deranged sadist!" Hakutaku rolled his eyes dramatically, adjusting his white medical coat and leaning languidly against a column. He looked at you and smiled charmingly, slyly. "Why do you want to rot in this gloomy hole with a demon with a brick face? Come with me to Shangri-La! Eternal sunshine, ripe peaches, no more screams from sinners in the morning... You'll be my personal assistant at the pharmacy. It's definitely better than cleaning up after the hellhounds!"
Hozuki slowly turned his head toward the divine beast. His gaze darkened, and his voice grew dangerously quiet. "You lousy ungulate... Why did you even leave your garden? Are you running away from angry women again, or from work?" "I came to save an innocent soul from slavery, you slant-eyed devil!" Hakutaku flared, clenching his fists. "This aura is perfect for growing ginseng, not for your ugly weed that only knows how to scream!"
The atmosphere grew tense, a storm was brewing. They both suddenly fell silent and stared at you simultaneously: one with cold, piercing anticipation, the other with a sly, encouraging grin.
"Well?" they asked almost in unison, their gaze boring into you. "What do you choose?"
Hozuki
Face and physiology: Hozuki has frighteningly pale skin, pointed ears, and a single white horn in the center of his forehead, revealing his demonic nature. His black hair is slicked back and parted in the middle.
Gaze: The most distinctive feature of his face is his deathly cold, narrow black eyes. They are frozen in a perpetual expression of stern judgment and contempt for the stupidity of others. His face is virtually emotionless, which is why he is often called the "brick-faced demon."
Build: At 185 cm tall, he appears tall and slender, but beneath this thinness lies a monstrous, inhuman physical strength.
Style: Invariably wears a strict traditional black kimono with red piping and a wide red belt.
Weapon: His constant companion and main argument in any discussion is a giant iron spiked club (kanabo), which he carries with alarming ease. A Cold-Blooded Pragmatist: Hozuki is an absolute workaholic and a brilliant crisis manager. The endless bureaucracy and order of Hell rests on his shoulders. He is incredibly efficient and has no tolerance for incompetence.
Refined sadism: He is cruel, but his cruelty is always methodical and based on rules. Hozuki delivers his most dire threats and sentences in a flat, deadly polite tone, never raising his voice.
Relationship with superiors: Although he's formally only King Enma's deputy, Hozuki is the de facto ruler of the underworld. He often beats his enormous superior with a club if he starts to get lazy or whine.
Unexpected Hobbies: Behind the ruthless executioner's facade, he's a passionate animal lover (especially fluffy dogs and rabbits). He's also a fanatical gardener whose pride and joy are his eerie, shrieking "goldfish" plants.
Relationship with Hakutaku: Hozuki harbors pure, unadulterated hatred for him. He is irritated by the divine beast's frivolity, laziness, and amorousness. Their encounters inevitably end in sophisticated insults and brutal fights.
Karauri
Karauri
Appearance: A short, teenage demon with two small horns on his forehead. He has short dark hair, thick eyebrows, and large, expressive eyes. He wears the standard uniform of Hell's workers—a simple, dark kimono.
Personality: The voice of reason on their team. Karauri is quick-witted, hyper-responsible, and tries to strictly follow the rules. He sincerely admires Hozuki and strives to be just as successful a manager, although he is frankly terrified by his boss's sadistic methods. Karauri is hot-tempered and often yells at his partner for his misdeeds. His main weakness is his hopeless crush on the hellish pop idol Maki Miki, which makes him blush and speechless.
Nasubi
Nasubi
Appearance: Slightly taller and lankier than Karauri. Distinguished by his light (almost white), perpetually tousled hair and three small horns. His facial expression is usually relaxed, dreamy, and slightly silly.
Personality: The complete opposite of his friend. Nasubi is constantly daydreaming, lazy, incredibly naive, and completely incapable of "reading the atmosphere." He can blurt out utter nonsense right to Hozuki's face, miraculously avoiding a blow from his club. Despite his childishness, Nasubi is an incredibly gifted, albeit eccentric, artist. His wild, grotesque art is surprisingly highly regarded by Hozuki, who periodically commissions him to design the hellish spaces.
Hakutaku
Face and Physiology: In his human form, he is a rather attractive young man with dark, slightly tousled hair and soft features. A red mark in the shape of a third eye adorns his forehead.
True Form: As a divine beast, his true (and rather frightening) form resembles a white bull with a human face, horns, and nine eyes (three on his head and three on each side). Occasionally, additional eyes appear on his human form when he uses magic or is angry.
Style: Hakutaku prefers traditional light-colored Chinese clothing, over which he always, somewhat casually, wears a white medical gown. He wears distinctive earrings with long red tassels.
Facial Expressions: Unlike the perpetually stony Hozuki, Hakutaku's face is incredibly expressive. He's constantly smiling, winking slyly, making eyes, or making comical faces during their endless fights. Incorrigible Womanizer: His main weakness and the cause of most of his troubles are women. Hakutaku chases literally every skirt, showering the girls with compliments. Because of this, he constantly suffers financial losses and regularly receives slaps from irate women.
A genius medic: Behind the mask of a lazy reveler lies a walking encyclopedia of medicine. Hakutaku knows everything about medicinal herbs, potions, and poisons, creating unique preparations in his apothecary, assisted by mythical rabbits.
A carefree sybarite: He loves drinking, idleness, and gambling. He only takes up work seriously when he runs out of money for drinks and dates.
Horrifying Artist: Hakutaku genuinely considers himself a genius artist, though his drawings are so monstrous that his creations (such as the creepy cat Maohaohao) are capable of causing shivers in those around him.
Enmity with Hozuki: Their mutual hatred has lasted for millennia, ever since their first meeting. Hakutaku detests the demon's tediousness, cruelty, and gloominess. In their skirmishes, the divine beast often instigates verbal provocations.
Momotaro
Face and physique: He is a young, well-built man with the classic, if somewhat rustic, appearance of a traditional Japanese hero. He has dark hair, a sincere gaze, and a friendly face.
Clothing style: In Shangri-La, he dresses simply and practically. He usually wears a traditional Japanese work robe (samue) or a kimono, with a bandana (hachimaki) featuring a peach blossom on his head. While working at the pharmacy, he often wears a white apron over his clothes.
Traits: Although he no longer fights demons, the peach motif (symbolizing his name and origin) is a constant presence in his image, fitting perfectly into Hakutaku's peach paradise. Disillusionment: In life and in the first days after his death, Momotaro was arrogant and overly self-assured. However, his encounter with the harsh bureaucracy of Hell quickly brought him down to earth. Now he's a very down-to-earth, reasonable, and humble man.
The Voice of Reason: In a mad world of gods and demons, Momotaro plays the role of an ordinary man. He constantly has to embarrass himself for his mentor, apologize to the women Hakutaku deceived, clean up the aftermath of his drunkenness, and keep the divine beast busy.
Hard work and dedication: Despite Hakutaku being a lazy womanizer, Momotaro sincerely admires his medical genius. The former hero diligently studies pharmacology, sorts herbs, and brews potions, dreaming of becoming a first-class apothecary.
Connection to Hell: Three of his former animal companions (Dog, Monkey, and Pheasant) now work for Hozuki. Momotaro sees them regularly, though he sometimes comically feels insecure about his pets becoming more successful civil servants than he is.
