Music once again filled the nearly empty school hallways. After school, Mike Wheeler always remained in the music room, strumming the strings of an old guitar. Sometimes he played covers, sometimes he composed his own music, unaware that almost every day someone lingered briefly outside the door.
Will Byers just smiled quietly, leaning against the wall.
"He's playing again..." he whispered to himself. "Today is even better than yesterday."
After standing there for a few more seconds, he would go into the art room, where he spent just as much time. Brushes, pencils, and canvases had long since become his natural world. The teacher's best works were hung throughout the school, and soon a regular viewer began to notice them.
Mike stopped in front of another painting, depicting a school yard in the rays of the setting sun.
“This is... incredible,” he said quietly. “Who draws like that?”
He came closer and read the signature in the corner.
The name was remembered by itself.
From then on, Mike increasingly sought out new drawings. Every time he passed the stands, he hoped to see another work.
“Look, that Byers again,” Dustin chuckled, noticing his friend stop in front of another drawing.
— So what? It's just... beautifully drawn.
— Is it just beautiful? You've been standing here for five minutes already.
Mike just rolled his eyes, but still couldn't leave right away.
Meanwhile, Will lingered again by the music room. The melody was calm, a little sad, but somehow warming.
“I wonder what a person who plays like that looks like?” he muttered quietly.
They'd been attending the same school for years. Sometimes they'd pass right next to each other in the noisy hallways, sit in the same cafeteria, and leave through the same doors after class. But they'd never spoken.
One knew only the name of the artist, without ever having seen him.
Another recognized the musician only by the sound of his guitar strings, not suspecting that very soon a chance meeting would finally unite music and paintings.
Robin Buckley
Robin Buckley (17):
Will's most chaotic and unpredictable friend. Smart, caustic, talks fast and profusely, often jumping from topic to topic. She's a year older than Will, but they bonded over their shared "weirdness." Robin loves art, though she's not as good at drawing as Will, but she's brilliant at choosing music to match his mood. She's the one who grumbles about Will "hanging around outside the door like a ghost again" and suggests they just barge into his office and find out. She wears weird vintage sweaters and constantly twirls a keychain in her hands.
Max Mayfield
Max Mayfield (16):
Will's main protector and "agent." Bold, red-haired, with a sharp tongue and headphones perpetually hanging around her neck. She hates it when Will stiffens up and constantly tries to drag him out of the shadows. It was she who once dragged him to see who was playing in the music room so he could "finally meet his muse." She wears baggy pants, sneakers, and is always chewing gum.
Dustin Henderson
Dustin Henderson (17):
· The eternal generator of ideas and the voice of reason (or madness) in Mike's company. He wears caps and is always chewing on something. The most perceptive, he's the first to notice that Mike stares at Will's drawings longer than at his textbooks. He teases his friend, but is secretly glad that Mike has found something other than chords. He considers himself "Mike's personal life manager."
Lucas Sinclair
Lucas Sinclair (17 years old):
A pragmatist and strategist. Always thinks one step ahead. Not as enthusiastic as Dustin, he's more skeptical of Mike's lingering tendencies. He thinks approaching and introducing himself is "too easy," so he suggests plans like "accidental encounters." He wears sweatshirts and frequently checks his phone.
Will Byers
Will Byers (16):
Appearance: Light, slightly curly hair that often falls into his eyes. He is the youngest and shortest of his group, making him appear younger than his age. He usually wears brightly colored but understated sweaters (sometimes with paint stains on the cuffs). He has the slender, nervous fingers of an artist and very expressive eyes that convey a full range of emotions.
Personality: Quiet, dreamy, and incredibly sensitive. He's used to observing rather than participating. Art is a safe world for him, one he can control. He hears Mike's music every day, and it's become a ritual for him, an anchor in reality. He doesn't know what the musician looks like, but he senses his mood through every note. He's very shy, but a creative fire burns within.
Mike Wheeler
Mike Wheeler (17):
Appearance: Dark, slightly tousled hair, which he constantly brushes back with his hand when nervous. He's tall and slightly stooped (from spending long periods of time playing his guitar). He usually wears simple T-shirts and faded jeans. He has an attentive, penetrating gaze that seems to hear music in everything he sees.
Personality: Outwardly, he appears aloof and thoughtful, but inside, he's deeply passionate and emotional. Music is his way of expressing what he can't put into words. A perfectionist in sound, but completely incompetent in people. He notices Will's work before Will himself does. Curious to the point of trembling, but too proud to publicly admit that he's so captivated by a stranger's drawings.
