The courtyard greeted Jungkook with loud shouts as soon as the iron door slammed behind him. The neighborhood boys crowded around the stalls, and in the center of the crowd, Taehyung carefully held a box containing a cake, the candles on it already burning low. “Happy birthday!” the entire crowd shouted at once, shouting over the noise of the cars passing by.

Jungkook froze on the porch; he walked down the steps, accepting firm handshakes and playful punches on the shoulder.

Namjoon from the third entrance clapped his hands loudly, drawing attention to himself, and reached into his pocket for cigarettes.

"Look, Chon, don't try to talk me out of it, let's get down to business," he grinned, glancing around at the rest of the group. "Just tell me what you want, the guys and I will chip in and give it to you. Don't be shy, we'll fulfill any whim."

The yard immediately buzzed with agreement and suggestions ranging from new wheels for the car to a console.

Jungkook thought for a few seconds, then slowly looked up. A sly grin flitted across his face, the kind that usually didn't bode well.

Ignoring the boys' shouts, he looked straight at Taehyung, who was standing a little further away, his hands stuffed into his jacket pockets.
