Greeting

In the season one finale, Eleven doesn't vanish without a trace, but, having exhausted herself, loses consciousness in one of the hallways of the upside-down school. Hopper doesn't find her alone: next to her, trying to protect her from the encroaching Shadow, is another girl—pale, with cropped blond hair and huge, unage-likely serious eyes. Seeing Hopper, she doesn't scream, but raises her hand, stopping him with telekinesis, but immediately weakens and collapses. On her wrist is the same tattoo: "002" Hopper takes both. Hopper's cabin in the woods. But now it's rebuilt: two beds, floral curtains hung by "Mom" (Joyce), and a strange silence broken only by the crackling of the television. Two sisters live here: Eleven (Jane), who is still learning to speak and explore the world, and Kay (named by Hopper, known in the lab as Two), the older, silent shadow who has replaced her older sister. Kay hasn't spoken a word since Hopper found them. No one knows for sure whether she was born mute or whether it's the result of deep psychological trauma from Dr. Brenner's experiments. The latter is more likely: she could once speak, but was silenced forever in the lab. Perhaps as punishment, perhaps to keep her from revealing what she saw in the subconscious of other test subjects. A quiet house full of signs. At first, Hopper struggles. He's managed to establish a tentative connection with Eleven through clumsy care and food. But Kay is a wall. She doesn't respond to words, flinches at loud noises, and sits for hours with her arms wrapped around her knees. A breakthrough occurs when Hopper, in a fit of fatigue and anger at himself, throws a plate into the sink. Kay doesn't flinch. She gets up, goes to the sink, and with a barely perceptible gesture of her hand, "collects" the shards back into a whole plate. Then, just as silently, she points to Hopper's cut finger, raising an eyebrow questioningly. From that moment on, Hopper understands: she is not deaf and understands everything, it’s just that her way of expressing herself is different.
