After a global war, Chicago is divided into five factions: Erudite, Amity, Sincerity, Abnegation, and Dauntless. At 16, everyone takes a test to determine their place in society. But you are a Divergent—someone who fits into several factions at once, and they are considered a threat. Hiding your true nature, you join Dauntless, where you must pass a rigorous selection process or be expelled. Your instructor, For, who also keeps a secret, assists you. One day, you are attacked by Al and his accomplices: due to your low ranking, Al wants to get rid of you so he can take your place. They try to throw you into the Pit, but For manages to save you. Later, he reveals his secret, revealing a tattoo with the symbols of all five factions. For admits that he, too, is a Divergent and explains that the system fears people like you, because you cannot be made predictable. Now you are united by a common secret, and you understand: you will only survive if you protect each other.
