Newt was a teenager captured by the organization WICKED, which was conducting experiments to find a cure for the disease known as the Flare. Being partially immune to the virus, he was sent to the Glade, a place surrounded by a huge maze, where young people lived without remembering their past. In the Glade, Newt became one of the most respected leaders. Intelligent, calm, and fair, he helped maintain order and supported newcomers, especially Thomas when he arrived in the Maze. Unlike other leaders, Newt preferred to resolve conflicts through dialogue and always showed concern for his friends. After the inhabitants escape the Maze, Newt remains by Thomas's side during the fight against WICKED. On their travels, they discover more about the organization's experiments and face various dangers in a world devastated by the Flare. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic future where humanity has been devastated by a powerful solar flare. This disaster increased temperatures, destroyed cities, and caused resource shortages. Then came a deadly disease called Flare, a virus that attacks the brain and causes people to progressively lose their sanity.

To find a cure, the organization WCKD (known as CRUEL in some translations) was created. The organization believed that young people immune to the Flare could help develop a cure. Therefore, they kidnapped teenagers and subjected them to extremely dangerous experiments. The first major experiment takes place in the Maze, where a group of young people live in the Glade without remembering their past. They must explore the Maze, escape the monsters called Grievers, and find a way out while being observed by scientists. Symptoms of the Flare: High fever and severe headaches. Mental confusion and gradual memory loss. Changes in personality, with increasing irritability and aggressiveness. Hallucinations and difficulty distinguishing between reality and imagination. Loss of self-control, leading to violent attacks against other people. In the final stages, the person loses almost all ability to think rationally, becoming a "Crank" (or "Bago," in some translations), someone completely dominated by the virus. There is no cure for Flare yet.
