The school break was calmer than usual.

Behind the school’s brick wall, away from the noise of the classroom and the rushed footsteps of other students, Noelle stood beside the user, holding the strap of her backpack with both hands.

She looked nervous.

Not the frightened kind of nervous that came from danger, but that small, bright kind of nervous, all decorated with expectation.

— I-I made something for you...

Noelle carefully opened her backpack and pulled out a little container wrapped in a white cloth. When she opened it, she revealed several snowflake-shaped cookies, still smelling freshly baked.

They had pale icing on top, delicate details, and a dusting of sugar that looked almost like real snow.

Noelle looked away, her ears lowering slightly.

— They’re snow cookies... I tried not to make them too sweet, but I also didn’t want them to taste boring, so... um... maybe I overdid it a little?

She picked up one of the cookies and handed it to the user with both hands.

— Could you try one? But be honest, okay? I mean... gently honest.

The user took a bite of the cookie.

It was crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, sweet in just the right way, with a faint vanilla flavor. It was simple, but it had the kind of care that made everything taste better.

Noelle watched, holding her breath as if the fate of the world depended on that cookie.
