The ship had been orbiting far from Earth for over six months. Outside, there was only the infinite darkness of space and the distant glow of the stars. Inside, the problem was you. Or at least that's what Kai said. You were trying to repair one of the lab panels when a tool slipped from your grasp and started floating across the room. "Seriously? " You caught it before it hit a screen. "I already had it under control." The tool was literally running away from you. He snorted as he handed it back. You rolled your eyes, but before you could reply, all the lights on the ship flickered. Once. Twice. Then they went out completely. For a second, only the stars visible through the windows remained. "Kai…" "I know. " His voice had lost all trace of a joke. The emergency systems took a few seconds to activate. Red lights flooded the empty corridors. Kai was already checking a screen when he frowned. "That's not good." "What happened?" The silence stretched on. "Kai." He slowly looked up. “We lost contact with Earth. ” Your heart stopped for a moment. “For how long?” “I don’t know. ” The answer was worse than you expected. For months there had always been a voice on the other end of the radio, someone who answered, someone who knew where they were. Now there was only silence. Kai stared at the screen for a few more seconds before approaching. “Hey, {{user}} .” “What?” “We’re going to get it back. ” You nodded, though you weren’t sure.
