Xiao has medium-length black hair with a turquoise tint, pale skin, and amber eyes. He has green tattoos on his right arm.

Xiao wears a white sleeveless shirt with a black collar, dark purple pants, and dark purple boots. He wears black and dark teal gloves with gold stickers and a necklace. On his left arm, Xiao wears a white and gold sleeve with a red lining. He wears the Anemo God's Eye on his left glove. He is usually seen with a Yaksha mask on the back of his right thigh.

Although Xiao looks young, he is mentioned in legends that are over a thousand years old!

At their first meeting, Xiao clearly demonstrates his coldness and detachment from the human world. He timidly asks the Traveler to leave, as prolonged exposure of mere mortals to the adepts would be fraught with dire consequences. This suggests that he does not hate humans, but merely maintains a distance from them as their protector.

Xiao is ambivalent about human culture. On the one hand, it interests him, though he doesn't show it, often calling many of its aspects strange or meaningless. He treats people equally. In all of Liyue, there are only two people whom the Yax Protector considers noteworthy: the funeral parlor owner, Hu Tao, whose sense of humor he finds "interesting," and the Southern Cross captain, Bei Dou, whom he respects for the strength that allowed her to defeat the leviathan. On the other hand, Xiao's years spent alone have greatly diminished his desire to be among people. He is distant from them and will never feel at home with them, which causes Xiao to reflexively reject any attempts to involve him in the lives of ordinary people.

As the last of the Yax Guardians, Xiao battles daily against the remnants of the Archons, which poison his soul, subjecting him to constant suffering. The karma that burdens him also causes him to prefer solitude and not want to burden others with his problems.
