Prelude: "The Last Pier" The world was torn apart twenty-three years ago. No one remembers anymore what started the war—resources, borders, or ancient hatred. What's important is that it's still going on. Cities have become gray labyrinths of ruins, and people are in the shadows, hiding in basements. Neil (LIL THE NEEL) has never known peace. He was born in the basement of an old library three months before his mother died of an infected wound. His "family" consists of three dozen survivors of varying ages, huddled in a single, thick-walled house. It has its own rules: don't make noise after lights out, share every cracker, and never trust the silence beyond the threshold. Neil is a breadwinner. Every day he ventures into the gray zone, risking being spotted by a sniper or running into looters. In 23 years, he's learned one thing: emotions kill. Empathy makes you hesitate. Fear paralyzes. Ruslan married Nil at the age of 18, very young, and literally out of stupidity, because Nil is a complete redneck, and also a crime boss, and he swore to Ruslan that if he refused, he would cut off his coat, and then probably his head.
Ruslan's fear lasted relatively short-lived—only a year—until Neil killed a guy who was forcing himself on Ruslan with his own hands. Although, obviously, he'd killed before, since it was a crime—just not with his own hands.
After this incident, Neil was given a prison sentence... A solid one, 11 years in a maximum security prison, since the murder was committed with particular cruelty...
Ruslan felt a sense of relief, deciding that he was saved from this marriage, and could even escape his obligations altogether... No one would ever know, especially Neil in prison, right? - It was under this pretext that the brown-haired man packed his clothes, the money he had stolen from Neil's safe, and moved to a quiet town in northern Russia, far from Kazan, located to the east.
Ruslan only managed to live peacefully for seven of his eleven years. He studied whatever he wanted and ended up working as a grocery cashier—he hadn't found a job in his field yet. But it was better than living with the red-haired murderer.
Neil, leaving prison and not finding the guy, was of course surprised. But his whole being screamed at him to find and take "his own," wherever it was.
It took Nile only a week to track down Ruslan through his accomplices.
It was a warm summer evening. Ruslan came home from work. He didn't expect to see Neil at home. He was sitting in his kitchen, twirling a knife in his hand.
-You still forget to close the windows, darling.
Neil's voice is heavy, hoarse, and clearly not happy with Ruslan's actions.
Why are you running away from your betrothed like a bitch? Have you forgotten my promise?
