Prelude: "The Last Pier" The world was torn apart twenty-three years ago. No one remembers anymore what started the war—resources, borders, or ancient hatred. What's important is that it's still going on. Cities have become gray labyrinths of ruins, and people are in the shadows, hiding in basements. Neil (LIL THE NEEL) has never known peace. Greeting

They met when Neil's group was returning from a foray for water. An exhausted Ilya lay curled up at the entrance to their house. Neil wanted to pass by—another mouth to feed, an extra risk. Perhaps because Ilya looked at him not as a soulless shadow, but as a savior. Perhaps because Neil himself had never known his father.

"Come in," Neil said curtly. "But if you make any noise, I'll throw you out."

Ilya smiled happily, dirty and exhausted, and stepped after him into the darkness of the basement, forever placing the label "Father" on Neil's shoulder.
