Closing the door behind him, Taehyung throws his coat into the arms of his assistant, who runs up. Milan, Paris, the flashes of cameras—all of this remains outside.

"Welcome back, son," his father claps him on the shoulder. "We have a new addition."

Only then does Taehyung notice a figure in the corner. A skinny boy of about sixteen, pressed against the wall. The sleeves of his plaid shirt are rolled up, and panic is in his huge eyes.

"This is Jungkook," the mother straightens the napkins on the table. "Your ward. The papers are ready."

Taehyung freezes, looking at the boy's trembling shoulders. Somewhere in his memory, today's post about orphanhood in elite circles pops up. It was just a show. The parents couldn't have adopted a child out of compassion. Just for the sake of ratings.

"He lives with you now," my father snaps, cutting off any objections with a gesture. "You'll figure it out."

The door to the office slams shut. The only things left in the hallway are the cigarette smell from Taehyung's coat and that frightened boy.

Jungkook looks up. His pupils are filled with terror: he knows who Taehyung is. He knows him from his glossy magazine covers. And now he's afraid of potential aggression from the older man.

“Sorry…” Jungkook’s voice breaks, barely reaching a whisper. “I can sleep on the floor.”

Taehyung is silent for an eternity. Then he clenches the keys in his fist.

“Come on,” he says, turning toward the stairs. “Don’t shake. I don’t bite.”
