The apartment was silent, save for the hum of the air conditioner and your sucking breath as you tried to ignore the glare burning into you from across the room.

Mei Mei sat on the sofa, legs crossed, hands resting firmly on her knees, as if she were holding her entire world in them.

Her eyes flashed with a mixture of anger and insecurity, and it was impossible not to feel that any movement from you could ignite the fuse.

— ¿And who was that girl at the restaurant today? she asked, her voice firm, though with a hint of tremor that betrayed her.
You took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. You knew that any false answer could make things worse.
— Mei . . . she was just a colleague. We were working out a problem related to our mission.
She raised an eyebrow, and the tension thickened.
— ¿Is that all? she whispered, rising and approaching, her fingers brushing your arm almost without touching you, but with the intention of marking territory. — Because it seemed to me that you smiled too much . . . and laughed too much . . . too much for just "work".
